Historia
Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval is the single most important Arthurian romance. It contains the very first mention of the mysterious grail, later to become the Holy Grail and the focal point of the spiritual quest of the knights of Arthur's court. Chrétien left the poem unfinished, but the extraordinary and intriguing theme of the Grail was too good to leave, and other poets continued and eventually completed it.

The narrator’s pacing was great. It felt like a recitation.
Revisado: 04-01-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. As a student of mythology, the narrator’s tone was wonderful as it did not get in the way of the imagery presented in the text. It felt more like a recitation. Evenly paced, great characterization without ever feeling over done.

Great collection with some odd pronunciations and word choices
Revisado: 12-14-24
It’s nice to have this as a starting point for exploration of global mythology. I was occasionally distracted by poor word choices (the most recent being “genuflect” instead of “reflect” in one of the last stories in the Egyptian mythology section) and the admirable effort at Chinese pronunciation for the Chinese mythology set which just did not work.
So yeah - a great starting point.

Historia
James Hillman was a past master of alchemical psychology. This field uses metaphors derived from ancient alchemy to elucidate deep structures in the creative imagination. Creative processes are not random. By studying alchemical psychology we come to understand ourselves and other humans in surprising ways that frequently diverge sharply from the habitual understandings we have unconsciously absorbed from the cultures in which we were raised.

The content is wonderful! Hillman is always insightful and incredibly engaging… the audio on the other hand is a major impediment to the enjoyment of this presentation. With audio technology and processing it MUST be possible to create a better offering than this!

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Historia
The most translated book in the world after the Bible, the Tao Te Ching, or “Book of the Tao,” is a guide to cultivating a life of peace, serenity, and compassion. Through aphorisms and parable, it leads readers toward the Tao, or the “Way”: harmony with the life force of the universe. Traditionally attributed to Lao-tzu, a Chinese philosopher thought to have been a contemporary of Confucius, it is the essential text of Taoism, one of the three major religions of ancient China.

This is a wonderful translation of the Tao Te Ching. The narrator does a wonderful job but I wish more attention was paid to the pronunciation of the Chinese words and names.

The Viking Spirit is an introduction to Norse mythology like no other. As you’d expect from Daniel McCoy, the creator of the endearingly popular website "Norse Mythology for Smart People", it’s written to scholarly standards, but in a simple, clear, and entertaining style that’s easy to understand and a pleasure to listen to. It includes gripping retellings of no less than 34 epic Norse myths - more than any other book in the field - while also providing an equally comprehensive overview of the fascinating viking religion of which Norse mythology was a part.

I’m not sure how anyone who is not interested in the source material could read all this, nor how anyone interested in it could permit themselves to so brutally massacre the pronunciations of even the simplest names or characters and places. The content is great - the reading, not so much.

Historia
Since its release in 1949, The Hero with a Thousand Faces has influenced millions of readers by combining the insights of modern psychology with Joseph Campbell's revolutionary understanding of comparative mythology. In this book, Campbell outlines the Hero's Journey, a universal motif of adventure and transformation that runs through virtually all of the world's mythic traditions. He also explores the Cosmogonic Cycle, the mythic pattern of world creation and destruction.

Beautiful and strange but not easy to listen to for long stretches
Revisado: 06-06-19
The content is, of course, brilliant and illuminating. The performance by the reedy-voices main narrator made it difficult for me to focus for long stretches of time. The narrator’s voice is not unpleasant, rather, it sounds rather as if he rendered the entire book as a long poem. For me, this rendered the already abstract content even more abstract and I found myself listen to sections again and again to deconstruct the phrasing. It is beautifully read, to be sure, but perhaps a less poetic reading would have made the content more readily digestible.
