Historia
Neko Case has long been revered as one of music’s most influential artists, whose authenticity, lyrical storytelling, and sly wit have endeared her to a legion of critics, musicians, and lifelong fans. In The Harder I Fight the More I Love You, Case brings her trademark candor and precision to a memoir that traces her evolution from an invisible girl “raised by two dogs and a space heater” in rural Washington state to her improbable emergence as an internationally acclaimed talent.

A diamond of a mind rendered in full
Revisado: 02-12-25
A generous memoir that allowed me to reconnect my own childhood and youth. Neko Case’s accounting of modern American and music history is very relevant today. Themes and symbolism carried me down the forest path of this hero’s story.

Historia
Along with her husband, a ghostwriter for a famous thriller author returns to her mother's house in the Florida town where she grew up. As the summer heat sets in, she wrestles with family secrets and memories of her own troubled youth. Her mercurial sister spends a growing amount of time using MIND’S EYE, a virtual reality device provided to citizens of the town by ELECTRA during the doldrums of a recent pandemic. But it’s not just the ominous cats, her mother’s burgeoning cult, or the fact that her belly button has become an increasingly deep cavern—something is off in the town.

I really enjoyed this absurd/magical adventure. The craftsmanship of words is excellent. I find a kinship between this novel and Duplex by Kathryn Davis. Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner. I feel like I’ve struck a vein of literary gold.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Brilliantly written, unflinchingly honest

Somehow creates a feeling of suspense in a memoire. Her experience and perspective illuminate some of the core truths of what it means to be a woman raised in American Christianity. Though extreme, her experiences echo many of my own. Thank you Tara.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Great vulnerability, great ghost writing. Really fills in the blanks for folks in my generation (millennials.)

Not far in the future, the seas have risen, and the central latitudes are emptying. But it's still a good time to be rich in San Francisco, where weapons drones patrol the skies to keep out the multitudinous poor.

Au currant sci-fi, artfully written
Revisado: 10-29-17
This book successfully creates a future world of believable future problems. It goes beyond that, and addresses what truly good literature gets at, which is the human experience. The big fears, the little moments, the constant heartbreak.
I liked the ensemble of male and female narrators reading for the mix of characters. It made the audiobook easier to follow.
