Felt it was too lengthy around the middle, but it earned its keep by the end. Iles is an amazing writer. Scott Brick is one of the best narrators ever.

Too real and palpable to be fiction, yet it is fiction at its best.

Great winding story. Insightful treatment of several sensitive issue. Characters to be missed deeply after the listening is done. Outstanding narration by all three readers. I was not drawn to this novel by any hoopla. I found it by tracking down narrations by Julia Whelan. I discovered her by her narration of Book Lovers. Followed her to her narrations of her two novels, My Oxford Year and Thank You for Listening. I now can thank her for leading me to this novel and author.

Both as an author and a narrator, Julia Whelan is delicious.

I stumbled across a blurb of Emily Henry’s Book Lovers. The story it foretold intrigued me. Julia Whelan happened to be the narrator. As I progressed through that audio book, I curiously looked to see what else Emily had written and Julia had narrated. That’s when I learned that Julia had penned two novels of her own. I have now listened to both My Oxford Year and Thank You for Listening and so loved reading them with my earballs. Both stories grab you right off the bat and keep you deeply engaged throughout. Julia is the best female narrator I’ve ever experienced. I am way a fan of hers now. Keep them coming.

I stumbled upon Emily Henry’s Book Lovers and discovered Julia Whelan’s gift as a narrator. The enjoyment prompted me to look for and check out other novels penned by Henry and performed by Whelan. I was excited to find several additional collaborations between the two but was intrigued to learn that Whelan had a couple of novels of her own. It thrilled me to discover that she narrated both of them. My Oxford Year provides a wonderful story populated by fabulously developed characters on turf delivered with such realism that I felt as if I’d experienced my own Oxford year. My next read with my earballs will be Whelan’s other novel, Thank You for Listening. I’ve read that My Oxford Year is to become a movie, though there seems to be a lack of movement in that regard. I’m hopeful that it will soon become a reality. I’d pay double to see that.

I guess I’m late to the table on this one, reading a 2014 novel in 2021. My adult daughter recommended Fikry to me. She loves to read books soon to become movies and then compare them to the theatrical offering. I confess, so do I. I suppose an article about the movie in production put the novel on her radar screen. Suffice to say, I’m glad she stumbled upon this one. It is probably the best word of mouth book tip I’ve received in the last two decades. I call myself a fiction writer, and as such, I always enjoy novels about publishing, writers, booksellers, and such. This story had threads that touched all those bases and more, to say nothing of providing an emotional journey of the depths and peaks of human interaction. I enjoyed the novel through a masterful narration by Scott Brick. Throughout the entire experience I kept imaging how Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj on The Big Bang Theory, will portray A.J. Fikry. My imagination tells me it’s a task he’ll nail beautifully.

Eyeballed it in 2004. Earballed it in 2021. Still Grisham’s best.

Miss Callie Ruffin resides in my pantheon of novel players most notable for abundant character and substance. It’s not crowded there. She shares space with Atticus Finch of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Mother Abigail Fremantle of Stephen King’s The Stand, and Leopold Bloom King of Pat Conroy’s South of Broad.

Michael Beck’s narration elevates Grisham’s already magnificent story to a significantly higher plane. As with other novels, he proves that he works masterfully with Grisham’s words and style.

You’ll never go wrong when John Grisham takes you on a journey to Clanton in Ford County, Mississippi. This one immerses you in every aspect of the community’s culture right along with Willie Traynor, its transplanted and neophyte newspaper publisher and editor.

Intimate imaginings of the Rat Pack and the dark side of Camelot make for excellent entertainment. This was the most fun I’ve had with a novel since Grisham’s Camino Island. Anytime you get compared to him, you know you’re on the right track. Jake Tapper is a devil of a storyteller. He weaves his threads like Stephen King, another earned comparison. I’m way looking forward to seeing where he goes next with Charlie and Margaret Marder.

Jake Tapper appears to have boundless talents. The Hellfire Club reveals excellent chops as as a storyteller. His performance as a narrator was spot on. Though my politics and his differ significantly, I have found him to be worthy of major presence as a deliverer of and commentator on the news. When he throws in his animated shorts on his CNN program it evidences further genius. I have long felt ABC erred greatly when they passed over him twice as anchor of This Week. I’m hoping he’s going to keep the stories coming. I’m about to embark on another journey with his fictional stars, the Marders, in The Devil May Dance. I’m excited about the prospects.

Legal thrillers got him here, but John Grisham’s other novels, Sooley being one, deliver such wonderful tastes humanity. They bring fun and enjoyment, as in the Camino books, as well as intense sports excitement, deep feeling, and inspiration, as in Sooley. Nothing derived from his keyboard should be ignored or left behind.

I did not vote for Hillary for president, and faced with a mulligan, I’d cast my vote samely in the same circumstances. According to my Facebook profile, I’m a Consiberal Republicrat. My positions on the spectrum of political issues resemble ordering from a menu at a Chinese restaurant, with selections from both column A and column B.

That said, the Hillary delivered by Curtis Sittenfeld was far more likable than the one that ended up with a name caboosed with Clinton. The portrayal of her early romance with Bill was endearing and believable. The imagined path forward leads me to believe that the Hillary that might have been would have been an improvement over the one that reality provided. This journey is a shining example of why I love fiction.

Though I’m sure I would have enjoyed this read with my eyeballs, I’m so glad I did it with my earballs. Carrington MacDuffie’s narration was golden, adeptly putting the story in Hillary’s voice as it so authentically did.
