Historia
For 12-year-old Ernest Young, a charity student at a boarding school, the chance to go to the World's Fair feels like a gift. But only once he's there, amid the exotic exhibits, fireworks, and Ferris wheels, does he discover that he is the one who is actually the prize. The half-Chinese orphan is astounded to learn he will be raffled off - a healthy boy "to a good home". The winning ticket belongs to the flamboyant madam of a high-class brothel, famous for educating her girls.

Tough read
Revisado: 08-20-22
it is beautifully written and I was sucked in by the characters. it was just hard to face how inhuman humans can be. I wanted to stop reading several times but the story just compelled me on. it was worth every minute.

Historia
A year and a half into our marriage, I found out my husband had been having an affair with a 19-year-old for six months. I filed for divorce and left. Two weeks later I met a man, and we fell madly in love. It was a fairy-tale romance for a month and a half, and he convinced me to join him on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy. Forty-eight hours before we were supposed to get on a plane, he told me he needed to go by himself. I was devastated. So, I had a decision to make. Either stay home and be heartbroken, or go travel Europe for a month by myself.

omg. this is the worst. maybe I am not her audience but she did nothing interesting. the author repeated the same garbage throughout the book - poor me, I am unable to fuction because a man hurt me. ugh.
it all came across as a teenager just learning about life. coming from an adult, it was just sad.

As a teacher I want to say this story may help children understand that they don't all learn the same. I also know teachers are taught to do more for children, to reach every type of leaner and identify those that struggle- hopefully before 6th grade.
Every child is different. Every teacher is different.

Historia
This is the extraordinary account of Amani's journey through adolescence as a Muslim girl, from the Islamophobia she's faced on a daily basis to the website she launched that became a cultural phenomenon to the nation's political climate in the 2016 election cycle with Donald Trump as the Republican nominee. While dispelling the myth that a headscarf makes you a walking target for terrorism, she shares both her own personal accounts and anecdotes from the sisterhood of writers that serve as her editorial team at MuslimGirl.com.

many mixed feelings
Revisado: 01-16-17
I was angry at the beginning... not because it was a book about Muslims but because I heard 1 line that offended me. I turned off the book for a day to digest it before returning. why did I allow myself to be offended by this book? I wasn't truly listening to her message.
I forced myself to listen to every word and really think about how it affected the writer. she lived her story, not me so I had to take away my judgement.
this incredible woman wrote from her soul. every sentence was a piece of her exposed. every woman should read or hear this book. every girl should.
Amani is a strong voice for women around the world.

Historia
An editor and writer's vivaciously entertaining, and often moving, memoir — a true story that reminds us why we should all make time in our lives for books.Nearing his fortieth birthday, author and critic Andy Miller realized he's not nearly as well read as he'd like to be. A devout book lover who somehow fell out of the habit of reading, he began to ponder the power of books to change an individual life—including his own—and to define the sort of person he would like to be.

My own "list of betterment" grew with this book. The author explored books I'd never heard of as well as gave me the insight to muscle through any bad book I may come across in the future.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Historia
Eunsun Kim was born in North Korea, one of the most secretive and oppressive countries in the modern world. As a child, Eunsun loved her country...despite her school field trips to public executions, daily self-criticism sessions, and the increasing gnaw of hunger as the countrywide famine escalated. By the time she was 11 years old, Eunsun's father and grandparents had died of starvation, and Eunsun too was in danger of starving. Finally her mother decided to escape North Korea with Eunsun and her sister.
