After listening to The God of the Woods, I had great hopes for this book and if I had listened to this one first it would have been my last Liz Moore title. The "I said/she said/ he said" repetition was relentless. The main character was not likeable and unbelievable as a police officer. I also had trouble with the narrator - I kept changing the playing speed trying to find a cadence that didn't drag but I think it is just her reading style.

I returned this book after listening to the first five chapters. I couldn't listen to the narrator/author. It may have gone better with a different reader but I doubt it.

I have listened to the entire Gamache series by Louise Penny and this is the first book I struggled to finish. The story was hard to follow as it rolled from one character and setting right into another without even a breath taken by the narrator. I had to go back and listen to parts repeatedly to follow the story. Also, I felt like the true nature of Gamache and Three Pines and the supporting characters had lost their "souls" that were so alive in the previous books. Maybe Louise Penny has tired of this character and is trying to find a way to finish off the series and if so, she may have done it with this book.

If you’re a Baldacci fan I’d pass on this one. Hopefully he’ll dump these characters and move on.

I have always liked this series by Jonathan Kellerman but have stuck with the hardcovers until this novel. I had to return it. After listening to 4 chapters I realized the narrator was ruining the story for me and I was so annoyed I couldn't pay attention to anything else. I'm going back to the written word for this one so the whole series won't be ruined.

I loved this book. The story was well written, the characters interesting, and the narrator gets an A-plus. I usually listen to books in bits and spurts, while walking or knitting, but I couldn't stop listening to this story. It was playing in my car, while I cooked, in the shower - I couldn't wait to find out what happens next but also was dreading the end because I knew I would miss these characters . If you're a fan of the futuristic/dystopian genres and like a touch of romance thrown in you should give this book a try. In the end, I do find myself missing Mayhew and Emmaline and the Moon so I will be buying Book 2 as soon as it hits the Audible pages.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I listened to this book because it was by John Grisham and I kept thinking it would improve as it moved along but there are other books I would rather have spent my time with.

Has The Whistler turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but I won't be listening to another book with this narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was just bad. She could not do male voices and her voice on female characters and narration was too lilting and wispy for this genre.

Did The Whistler inspire you to do anything?

No.
