The perfect book for you
Revisado: 02-22-21
Matt Haig has written a gorgeous and engrossing story that at its heart is a reflection on how we should live without regrets. It’s the perfect book to read at any age. I want to write like Matt. Since I can’t I will read all of his books. Go Matt!
Carey Mulligan’s narration is perfection.

England, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith's son from Putney emerges from the spring's bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army.

Exceptional
Revisado: 09-04-20
I didn’t think the series could get better. Not a wasted word - everything she writes is so compelling. Ben Miles’ narration was exceptional. This book gave me an intense gaze into that period - the mindset, the politics, power plays just to stay in favour of a largely sociopathic ruler.

Historia
Samantha is a professional seductress and con artist with a heart of gold. If she talked about her work, she’d tell you she only pilfers organs for medical research and that she only takes one kidney, and she only steals those kidneys from dishonest people. It’s hell on her social life. Abe is the doctor and Sam's partner in crime. He isn’t much of a criminal. Except for the kidney stealing. But he’s using that money to fund his research that he anticipates will be able to cure diabetes. So, all for a good cause...? You decide. Of course, it's hell on his social life.

An extraordinary novel that I have been meaning to read for years. Tolstoy is such an insightful writer from a character and historical perspective. I felt like I knew these characters so well and understood so much of the time it was written.
His writing is exquisite. The narration was superb.

Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

An alternate history that felt so real
Revisado: 01-03-19
1950s history is changed by a meteor. All of a sudden the world has to think more seriously about space. Told from the perspective of a brilliant female mathematician - this is a story of maths, sexism, racism, the impact of severe anxiety and a dogged pursuit of a dream to be an astronaut.
I love that the author presented life in this time for a woman as it was. Brilliantly narrated I couldn't stop listening as the story was a cracker!

Revisado: 01-03-19
Life and relationships are complicated. What if you made a different decision? Where would life take you? This book is all about the impact of choice and the myriad of paths. What I loved is that this isn't about how love conquers all, its about how life shapes and impacts you. Really a tremendous read/listen.

Historia
The Martin Beck books are widely acknowledged as some of the most influential detective novels ever written. Written by Swedish husband and wife team Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö between 1965 and 1975, the 10-book series set a gold standard for all subsequent Scandinavian crime fiction. Long before Kurt Wallander or Harry Hole, Beck was the original flawed policeman, working with a motley collection of colleagues to uncover the cruelty and injustice lurking beneath the surface of Sweden's liberal society.

One of my favourite audible books
Revisado: 01-07-18
Would you listen to The Elegance of the Hedgehog again? Why?
Barbara Rosenblat is an exceptional narrator. I read the print version and loved the book, but the Audible version was excellent. There is a lot of philosophy in the book, but listening to Barbara's narration make it absolutely compelling. The book is at its heart an ode to individuality and friendship. I never cry reading books, but the last chapter had me in tears because it was just beautiful. (The movie version is to be avoided!)
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The final chapter
