Historia
The seminal rap group A Tribe Called Quest brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces. This narrative follows Tribe from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Throughout the narrative, poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself.

Outstanding
Revisado: 11-12-24
This book is a love letter to Tribe. Very well written and thoughtful. I actually knew the author when he was in high school. I worked with his older brother, who was also a big Tribe fan- we argued about The Love Movement album when it was released (I liked it).
This is written with a great prose. I found out Hanif was writing because we had anticipated article about him in our local paper. He's been winning awards for a good reason. If you like hiphop, check this one out.

Historia
Continuously available in print since 1968, this novel has become embedded in progressive anti-racist culture with wide circulation of the book and hotly debated film. A literary classic, The Spook Who Sat by the Door is a strong comment on entrenched racial inequities in the United States in the late 1960s. With its focus on the “militancy” that characterized the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this is the story of one man’s reaction to ruling-class hypocrisy.

Excellent And Necessary
Revisado: 03-12-24
I don't think there is another book quite like this one. It's simple, yet smart. Deep, yet shallow enough not to lose you if you can't keep up. I saw the film before I read the book. Good film, much better novel.
A multi-faceted story of individual development and growth, all while wrapped in the now historic but still culturally relevant scene of black power and urban resistance in the 1960s American ghetto.
The author writes dialogue with the same ability of great authors like Hurston. He captures the current slang and euphemisms with the smooth prose of a modern Shakespeare. I wish he had written more books, I would happily read anything written by him.
There's so much here. Part character study, part psychology textbook, part manifesto. A book like this could only be written by someone with the training and understanding of the tactics so eloquently detailed. My utmost respect is given to the author.
This is an easy to read and relatively short novel. I think it was written that way on purpose, the author didn't want potential readers to be intimidated by a large book. But don't let the simplicity or brevity fool you. This is a masterpiece!

Historia
At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the United States, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy's change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence.

Great Book
Revisado: 08-11-23
I've read at least 20 books on the assassination and this is perhaps the best one. It's a somewhat dry read, which is the only criticism I have. It's kind of textbook like. But the main reason to buy this book is the information! I learned many things here that I'd never seen in other books. If you read only one book on the assassination, make it this one.

Historia
Tom Segura is known for his twisted takes and irreverent comedic voice. But after a few years of crazy tours and churning out podcasts weekly, all while parenting two young children, he desperately needs a second to himself. It’s not that he hates his friends and family — he’s not a monster — he’s just beat, which is why his son’s (ruthless) first full sentence, “I’d like to play alone, please,” has since become his mantra.

So Funny!
Revisado: 04-20-23
I'm a big fan of stand up and Tom has become one of my favorites. This book is full of funny stories (some that I've heard him joke about on stage) and other details of his life that help us get to know him better. Even better that it was recorded by him, so you get to hear his voice. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone that likes Tom's comedy.

Depth and Clarity Related to JFK Assassination
Revisado: 02-15-22
Ultimately an informative read. Provides insight into agency tactics of the 60s. Highly recommended for all who dive deep into learning more about Kennedy assassination and surrounding events. Only one criticism: the book may take a little too much time providing details of Mary's life that could've been trimmed for some brevity. I would like to hear more from this author.

Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

Boring...
Revisado: 10-29-21
I got this book because I love all things Malcolm Gladwell, but this book bored me. Perhaps I should have known better since I had no interest in the subject matter. I didn't find the larger relevant point I usually get from reading Gladwell. If you aren't interested in the subject matter, don't get this book assuming it is anything like his other work.

The 12 commitments that Chris and Larry share cover the gamut of life, from family, including your spouse and children, work, health, finances, service, and friendships. This little book will cause you to think about what kind of man you are and what kind of man you can become.

I listened to this just to get perspective, not because I needed help with the issue. Some topics are simplified, but I tend to agree with most things that were said. It reinforced the common sense ideas that I already had. Glad it was a short listen.

If you want to know the truth about the assassination of MLK, this book is a must read! Captivating from the beginning. The proof is clear that just like most other political assassinations of that decade, there is more to the story.
