Awful.
Revisado: 04-11-17
What disappointed you about Time Was?
Very little story. A guy comes from the future, has a "perfect" sexual relationship with a female, then has to decide whether to return to the future or not. That's it!
Has Time Was turned you off from other books in this genre?
No story, just sex.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Luke Daniels?
He was ok. It was the lack of plot that brought him down. I was just embarrassed for him to have to read such drivel.
What character would you cut from Time Was?
There were really no other characters to consider, just really the two of them (some family made an appearance then disappeared.)

Historia
This version of the Bennet family - and Mr. Darcy - is one that you have and haven't met before: Liz is a magazine writer in her late 30s who, like her yoga instructor older sister, Jane, lives in New York City. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in Cincinnati to help - and discover that the sprawling Tudor they grew up in is crumbling, and the family is in disarray.

An insult to the intellect
Revisado: 04-24-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Contrived situations, and improbable and inappropriate sex. It is not clear even how, let alone why Darcy and Elizabeth get together.
What was most disappointing about Curtis Sittenfeld’s story?
"Modernizing" the story just does not work in this case. The premise is simply too implausible. It is not a witty commentary about our society. Rather, it is a poor attempt to use humor without discernment or intelligence. Poorly done.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cassandra Campbell?
She was ok. It's was the material that I had problems with.
What character would you cut from Eligible?
The story needs to be totally rewritten. Why do the characters have to jump into bed each time they meet anew? Where are the in-depth descriptions of their characters?
Any additional comments?
Don't bother buying this book. It was a very big disappointment.

Historia
Acclaimed author Walter Dean Myers presents a compelling novel that looks at America's occupation of Iraq through the eyes of those who live it first hand. Charged with building up relations between the U.S. military and the Iraqi people, a team of soldiers strives to make real connections and bridge the divide between two very different cultures. On constant guard from frequent suicide bomb attacks and deadly skirmishes, their situation reveals a tragic human toll.

Excellent, moving account of soldiers' lives.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The author describes the lives of soldiers in Iraq, members of a squad of civil affairs soldiers, in 2003. They are working to "win the hearts and minds" of Iraqi citizens, but their job is no less dangerous than many other soldiers because it is rarely clear who is friend and who is foe. The ambiguity is exasperating and often dangerous. In simple but clear language, the story is told in first person through experiences and through letters back home. The dialogue is realistic as it is often very humorous. I was finally able to start to grasp how it might feel to experience life as a soldier in Iraq. For me, it was eye-opening and very worthwhile.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the use of the language and the realism of the dialogue. Instead of using persistent swear words, the author simply showed us the frustration, confusion, the comradship and the cynical humor that men who are constantly together often use. The protagonist, Robin, is often pensive, observing as he is participating, trying to think things through.
Which scene was your favorite?
I liked all the scenes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I would have if I could have. The narrator set the perfect tone for the story. Very well done.
Any additional comments?
Very highly recommended. I will certainly be looking for any other books by this same author.
