Unique Beauty and the Beast retelling
Revisado: 02-07-25
A delight. A darker story than one might expect, which was a wonderful surprise. The tactfully implied abuse and trauma also bring a maturity to the tale. Genuinely a slow burn romantic tale.
One of my favorite narrators, so this was a great audiobook to engage in.

Took me a while to get acquainted with the narrator's voice, but I ended up greatly admiring how well she differentiates each character. The story is fast-paced and well written. Definitely worth a listen!

Hidden away in a cottage in the mountains, she believes she’s a peasant girl named Primrose, a reality frequently challenged by confusing snippets of forgotten royal memories. For there’s a darkness inside her head, one that is slowly claiming her identity, memory by memory. Everything changes when Reve encounters a rugged hunter, a man who offers her a hopeful future despite her blank, forgotten past.

Enjoyable, albeit weaker installment in the series.
Revisado: 01-18-25
Highlights:
The charming, humorous aunts in the cottage. The return of Drake and Briar (their stories are my favorites), and the forgiveness that occurs upon the familial reunion.
The creative way Peters used Sleeping Beauty as the backdrop of this tale.
Weaker points:
It could have been tighter. Repetition was apparent. Peters does use "ache" and "dared" so frequently it is predictable writing. Unlike the main male characters in previous books, I felt the reader has less opportunity to connect or understand this one (Archer). Moreover, if you like the banter between lovers in previous books, there is none of that here. Very different personalities.
Overall, still a worthwhile listen if you're into this series. Looking forward to the next.

Princess Seren has always expected her life to be one of duty and order, and her upcoming marriage alliance is no exception: She’ll sail to Bytamia to marry the crown prince as expected. But what she doesn’t expect is for the voyage to her new life to be delayed by the whims of an enchanted map and an adventure to a mystical island rumored to contain a legendary treasure.

A story of transformation and healthy compromise. Ronan and Seren do have great dialogue, though Seren can seem intolerable and purposefully difficult in the early stages. Ronan was a delight. Similarly to the previous book, the limited locations provide a tighter storyline with fewer characters.

Historia
When Maren runs away from the threat of a forced marriage, the last place she expects to end up is the Malvagarian Palace, home to the enchanted gardens, a cursed prince, and a magical rose that traps her there. Crown Prince Briar isn’t pleased to be stuck with a troublesome guest, especially one as mischievous and curious as Maren. She, on the other hand, is determined to escape, but instead finds herself inconveniently falling in love with him. Despite her lack of beauty, feelings steadily blossom between her and the prince.

Probably one of the simpler stories by Peters in this series. Fewer characters to follow. I actually liked that narrow format.
Beauty and the Beast retelling. I truly enjoyed Briar from Reflection, and even he and Drake's continued tension from the previous book was improved. Briar is a gentleman (when he is not influenced by the curse), and I admired his love for both his people and his romantic interest. He is chivalrous. We need more chivalry in stories these days.

The best book in this series!
Revisado: 01-13-25
The narrator never fails to keep one engaged. This story is face paced, and the slow burn romance makes it more realistic. I really enjoyed the unique pieces of fairy tales woven into this fantasy. Both main characters grow quite a lot throughout, which I always appreciate. There is ample grace and forgiveness for others, too. Please get this book if you like this series. It is worth it!

Historia
Anwen's uncanny resemblance to Princess Lavena has been a curse since the moment she entered her service, as the spoiled princess has frequently used it to her advantage by forcing Anwen to switch places with her. But Princess Lavena's latest scheme is her worst - and most dangerous - yet: compelling Anwen to take the princess's place in her marriage to her loathed fiancé, Prince Liam.

I enjoyed Pathways, so I was excited about this addition to the series. I greatly appreciated having characters from the first book reenter this one.
Anwen is certainly a girl I would love young ladies to admire. She is self-less, empathetic, kind, and wise. Someone we all can emulate. The narrator is stupendous, as always. As for the story, most of it kept me engaged. I do like Liam and Anwen together, as they bring out the best in one another.
My issues arise from how unrealistic it seemed that people would not recognize Anwen more readily as an "imposter". As for the writing, there are very frequently used phrases such as "I ached" when describing how Anwen feels. It was repetitive after a while and predictable. Not enough to make me lose interest in the story, however. I would definitely recommend a listen.

When the continuously shifting pathways lead her to a mysterious stranger, Eileen finds her promise to fiercely guard her heart increasingly difficult to keep. One night when she becomes lost in a storm, the enchanted forest's pathways lead her to the castle, home to the kingdom's Dark Prince, where Eileen finds herself entangled in what many consider an opportunity but which Eileen believes to be a curse.

Sweet, cozy tale. Redemptive, too. Human error and grief woven into a story of unfolding young love. Clean romance. I never read YA. This was a treat. An escape. I would register. Highly recommend. Suitable for teens, too, which is rare for fantasy romance of late. The narrator is exceptional. Her soothing voice makes this a comforting background accompaniment to walks and drives.

Historia
The sisters of Gwenafwy Abbey have cherished their contemplative life - days spent in prayer, reflection, tending the convent's vegetable gardens and making their award-winning organic cheese, Heavenly Gouda. Life seems perfect, except for Sister Agatha, a die-hard mystery fan who despairs of ever finding any real life inspiration for her own novel. That is, until the abbey's sexton is found dead under an avalanche of gouda. Despite the reservations of the local constable, Sister Agatha is convinced it's murder and the game is afoot.

Passion. Intrigue. Complex, flawed, and redeemed characters. Saturated with history and family/relational drama. This was an excellent series of books overall, but Circle of Spies wins out. Definitely will relisten at some point. As always, Zimmerman's narration is stellar.
