Fun read, engaging

Total
4 out of 5 stars

I liked the historical setting of WWII in England and was engaged by Elise's evolution, when forced to move from her beloved Austria and everyone she knew and loved.

Narrator's doing character voices is always tricky for me, though. I think overall she does a decent job, and eventually I was into the story enough to let go.

However, when she speaks as Elise, using an Austrian accent, the register she chose always sounded whiney & plaintive to me. It pulled me out of the story more often than I would have liked--so I deducted one star for this.

Took me a while

The furst time I tried listenung I kept tripping over the repetition and "Christ Conscoiiusness." I got bored easily and felt like it droned on in vagueries. I wasn't ready.
It's now several months later and I tried again. I was riveted, often listening to especially resonant passages multiple times before moving on. I honestly can't say what changed. I feel the same, but clearly I'm different, because I actually heard what was being communicated and it made sense..
This book left me feeling hopeful and more loving in grneral. I thought the exercises were interesting and challenged me where I still hold grudges. Paul Selig's voice is very pleasant and I like the sprinkles of dry wit , even though I don't think the guides were trying to be funny.
I will likely listen to this book again and again.

This book was both skeptical and open ended, exploring NDE's (or DE's, as the author poses) from multiple facets: interviewing experiencers & their families/friends, medical practitioners, hospice, scientific researcher, etc. The author clearly has her own journey as she explores her curiousity and personal biases. As someone who is certain we survive death, I especially appreciated the chapters on negative death experiences, and the input from doctors and researchers who think the experience is more likely the physiology of a dying brain & body.
I struggled slightly with the reader's afect/tone, it felt measured and acted. I got used to it, though, and was able to let go of judgement to enjoy the material.
