Stephanie Coontz (author) has an incredible depth of the history of marriage, but I struggled so hard to make it through the book.

The introduction named so many topics I was interested in, but it then delved into a deep dive of *marriages* rather than the concept of marriage. Occasionally bringing points together, but it was hard to follow, going back to the Roman times, but with peeks at "600 years later", and going into the depths of an individual marriage and the political landscape. In addition, there was almost no opinions, just dry facts being shared, and incredibly tedious to get through.

Then the book wrapped up with a fantastic summary of the points, shared opinions of the authors, and was fantastic. I think the summary should have been given up front, which laid out the change of the marital landscape, and then as each chapter hit a new period of time, that change of the political landscape could be noted.

Printing money is the solution to... Everything?

Revisado: 09-24-24

Author brings foreward the idea that all government programs and large issues with the country can be solved with printing money. She cherry picks quotes, emotionally criticizes anyone who hasn't "seen the obvious truth" of MMT and uses effusive cajolatory adjectives for anyone who does. She uses incredibly one-sided unconvincing arguments against the reason MMT won't cause inflation, and completely sidesteps serious and doesn't mention the importance of being the world's reserve currency, and doesn't even mention the petrol dollar (despite applauding Nixon for seeing the light of going off the gols standard, which is not how that went down).

I hadn't realized how much of this would be an attempt at proving Jung and Freud via myths. The intent is clearly trying to prove myths fit these psychological principles, but the psychological principles, many of which have been disproven, are never questioned or considered to be potentially fallible. He is blind to the fact he is treating them as such.

PopSci fails to answer basic question: why; dangerouslu avoids important questions

I would have expected a book purportedly talking about how pain and pleasure relate from a scientific perspective to answer the basic questions: why does this happen? What are the physical effects and risks? What are the mental effects and risks?

The author is an amazing story tell or and does a phenomenal job removing tabboo from the practices, but knowingly or unknowingly is using psychological persuasive techniques that blend answering these questions with purely historical stories, with detailed accounts of religious pain, historical origins of the words masochism, twisting of meanings of pain, and turning out a 1984-esque "pain is pleasure" rhetoric bolstered by studies... Studies of related but not the exact questions.

I was so optimistic for my first Michael Chrichton book, many friends seem to enjoy him and I had a particular interest in swarm intelligence. The book quickly takes seismic leaps in actual reality to an infinitely far away scifi technology, per the intro, seems like he is trying to scare everyone else as he is scared of swarms. If I take the book just as a work of fiction, he gives copious hints and foreshadowing in the 2nd chapter from the main characters own perspective, but somehow the main character is dull-witted enough to not make the some realizations as the reader for nearly the remainder of the book. Nearly no surprises, strange attempts and trying to being in family life. Also filled with many stereo types and tropes of the late 90s and early 00s

Almost every woman in every scene was sexualized. I came for the magic and fantasy, but that seemed background for much of the story. It wasn't bad but wasn't great. Not sure if it was the narrator or his mic setup, but I felt like I could hear every breath and every time his lips opened with as all suction. Felt a bit like an unintended ASMR experience.

Changed narrator, not good for this book

This narrator almost ruined the story for me, using deep southern accents for the Bob goblins and other choices were pretty much entirely bad. Others mentioned different personality, but it felt more than that, if this had been any other book in the series I would have stopped right here.

He says it at the end of the book, he followed what a lot of other books said, and it worked. This is a great single book to read if you don't want to read 20 others.

Neil Gaiman tells stories so well, so when I wanted to learn more about Norse Mythology and saw that he was obsessed with it, this was an easy winner. Finished listening in a couple days.
