Historia
In 1906 I was barely over 14 years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She said, "You've always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now you're going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?"

Good book, dry performance
Revisado: 09-16-22
The story was excellent but the read was dry and monotone. It often sounded like a child was reading in the way punctuation was ignored and pauses at inappropriate places. The reader sounded depressed and uninterested. The good part is the story carries itself so you forget the horrible reader.

Historia
Trapped in the festering sore of a major American ghetto, a young man and his girlfriend - both attractive, talented, and full of promise - are inexorably pulled into the living death of the hardcore junkie. It is a horrifying world where addicts will do anything to get their next fix. For 23 years of his young life, Donald Goines lived in the dark, despair-ridden world of the junkie. It started while he was doing military service in Korea and ended with his murder in his late 30s. He had worked up to a hundred-dollars-a-day habit - and out of the agonizing hell came Dopefiend.

Disturbing world of Drugs
Revisado: 06-11-21
The book was interesting enough, it's an old book told at a different time but a lot is still relevant. The story keeps you in engaged but three are soft vet disturbing parts and acts. Be prepared for very explicit disgusting acts of human depravity.

Historia
The man accused of shooting a black girl, a storekeeper named Paris Trout, has no great feeling of guilt, nor any fear that the system will fail to work his way. Trout becomes an embarrassment to the polite white society of his small Georgia town, which prefers to hold itself high above such primitive prejudice. But the trial does not allow any avoidance of the stark reality of social and racial tensions.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 02-13-20
The book seemed unfinished, there were stories left undone and untold. The reader was distracting, he over pronounced words and under inflected tones. It was difficult to finish but I was waiting for it to get better.
I saw the movie many years ago and though it was harsh and tragic it was better than the book, oddly enough. I chose the book because I thought I would get more of the back story but that was not the case they were totally mismatched.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Great imagining
Revisado: 06-07-19
I've read a couple of historic time travel books, some done well, some ok and some not so well. This was perhaps one of the best I've read. You can't overthink the time travel paradigms or you'll never read on...take it at face value and enjoy the story. Stephen King knocked it out the park with this one.
The narration was spot on and the history (and "history") was terrific. Just an all around good read about a subject that still has people talking today over 50 years later.

How an audio book should be done
Revisado: 06-07-19
The story was riveting from the very beginning and the performance made it even better. It was much better than I thought it would be and I was truly attached to all the characters. A fully immersive experience.
You'll laugh and cry and be angry from one moment to the next. Loved it!

Whiny and unrealistic
Revisado: 06-07-19
I haven't finished the book and I'm not sure I'll be able to but I wanted to capture my initial observations. Though the narrator is a good reader, as reading goes, he's not a very good narrator. The voices don't fit the characters, I know that's subjective, but it's hard to distinguish the characters. And his 'Southern Belle' accent is way off. It takes away from the listening experience. And he does this pause after every period, it makes for choppy stiff dialogue.
I do like the question the book attempts to answer or raise...Christains justifying owning slaves, in the name of saving them. I think th he writing lacks real depth, but it is a hard subject to write about honestly. JMHO!

couldn't finish the book
Revisado: 01-23-19
I've been a Stephen King reader for many years and I just started listening to audibles in the last few years. As with The Wind in the keyhole this one was difficult to listen to. I didn't realize it was Stephen King until I started it and I'm like oh my God that sounds like Stephen King narrating. As other people have said he is great on paper and a great story weaver but he is horrible at narrating please leave that to the people who have a talent for it. I couldn't finish the book it's so hard to follow and stay with just because he's absolutely boring, you get lost in the narration and forget the story.

The novel opens with the vampire world in crisis… vampires have been proliferating out of control; burnings have commenced all over the world, huge massacres similar to those carried out by Akasha in The Queen of the Damned… Old vampires, roused from slumber in the earth are doing the bidding of a Voice commanding that they indiscriminately burn vampire-mavericks in cities from Paris and Mumbai to Hong Kong, Kyoto, and San Francisco.

Not like other books
Revisado: 12-04-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It got me through my commute, but it would've been a waste otherwise.
Would you ever listen to anything by Anne Rice again?
I love the old Anne Rice stories, so yes I would hoping to rekindle the love I had for her books.
What didn’t you like about Simon Vance’s performance?
The accents seemed disingenuous and forced. It was hard to dechiper them even though they were recognizably different. I know that sounds strange, but true.
Did Prince Lestat inspire you to do anything?
No
Any additional comments?
I was excited when I saw the Chronicles were being continued, but disappointed when I listened to the book...very contrite and overly superficial.

Again narrator didn't fit the character
Revisado: 05-26-16
What did you like best about this story?
The story, the historical elements
How could the performance have been better?
A better narrator. The voice was too tame, too refined to fit the character.

While his son, Edward, has been named his successor, there are other Saxon claimants to the throne - as well as ambitious pagan Vikings to the north. Great story, horrible narrator
Revisado: 05-26-16
What made the experience of listening to Death of Kings the most enjoyable?
The story alone. It was hard listening to this unenthusiastic narrator. His mispronunciation of words was extremely annoying. It always took a moment to realize what or whom he was speaking of.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Stephen Perring?
Johnathon Keeble hands down. ALL the other narrators left much to be desires
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If the narration had been better I would say yes, but it was hard just getting through the book at all. I was so caught up on the narration that I often had to rewind to hear parts again.
