Historia
America is undergoing a massive experiment: It is moving, in fits and starts, toward a multiracial democracy, something few societies have ever done. But the prospect of change has sparked an authoritarian backlash that threatens the very foundations of our political system. Why is democracy under assault here, and not in other wealthy, diversifying nations? And what can we do to save it?

Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

story of struggle
Revisado: 03-17-23
one should be cautious about judging the past by present standards. this is a story of people doing what seemed best for the time. they made mistakes. it is easy to think we would have done better but maybe not.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Historia
Dunbar-Ortiz adroitly challenges the founding myth of the United States and shows how policy against the Indigenous peoples was colonialist and designed to seize the territories of the original inhabitants, displacing or eliminating them. And as Dunbar-Ortiz reveals, this policy was praised in popular culture, through writers like James Fenimore Cooper and Walt Whitman, and in the highest offices of government and the military.

one side of the story

Revisado: 05-17-17
this book is totally biased. although the facts she presents are true they are one thread of a very complicated story. I did learn some things which have changed my understanding of US history. I recommend this book as part of a more complete study.

Like a baby
Revisado: 11-17-15
Pimsleur lets you learn a new language like you learned to talk when you were a baby. You start by listening and repeating what you hear. You do not start with grammar and vocabulary
The key is to listen every day and to repeat a lesson if you are not confident. I am surprised at how easy it is.

obsessive
dark
raw emotions
Who was your favorite character and why?
The old woman who had to watch the deteration of the husband and wife shhe knew had murdered her son without being able to express anything directly to them.
What about Kate Winslet???s performance did you like?
her voice is captivating, she does a good job of distinguishing different characters
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I can not imagine this as a film since it is so psychologically focused
Any additional comments?
It got off to a really slow start, if it had not been for Kate Winslett's wonderful reading I would have quit. The author did a great job of describing the scenes, the characters, and their thoughts.
