Historia
Three months ago, the horrible news that the Dark Druids captured his beloved pet Gryphon sent thirteen-year-old Jake Everton reeling—especially since he knows he’s the one the warlock brotherhood really wants. It’s a trap, and poor Red is just the bait. Well aware of the threat, the Elders have forbidden the daring boy hero from taking any action to rescue his faithful companion. Instead, Jake and his friends must cool their heels at the Order’s palace headquarters, where they’ll be “safe.”

Through a Mirror, Darkly
Revisado: 04-21-24
If you've been following the Gryphon Chronicles from the beginning (and I would hope you're not trying to start a series with Book SIX!), then you already know that E.G. Foley have done an astounding job of creating a world full of magic, mystery, and intrigue while also allowing we the readers to truly believe that this could be the past of our own timeline. You already know that Jake and his friends are a well-created and eclectic group of friends who are going to do whatever they have to in order to save the day. You already know that the Lightriders and the Dark Druids are going to pull out all the stops and that we are headed into a much deeper, darker dive into the war between Good and Evil. And boy, is Wyvern evil!
But what really makes this segment of the Gryphon Chronicles worthy of your attention is just how much the plot grabs you and flies you along with the kids - and occasionally with the bad guys - to really immerse yourself in the whole story. And, beyond that, how expertly the new narrator - Jake Benson - takes over the telling of these tales with a truly wonderful grasp on what makes the characters tick. They seem to jump out of your headphones or speakers and run amok over your productivity for the day. Benson does a great job of making you feel the motivations of all the characters with recognizable voice changes and clear emotional pitches. When the characters were angry, or sad, or frustrated, you can't help but fell that way, too, and that is all on the narrator. He really gets these characters and allows the reader to forget that they're being read the story and really fall into the plot on their own.
Run, don't walk, to find your headphones and give this a listen as soon as you do!

Another GREAT Installment!
Revisado: 11-08-23
I can't say anywhere near enough about how great this series is as a whole, how great the characters are, how amazingly the authors stay true to their storyline and development of this world we've all fallen in love with! If you're looking at reviews for this, the eighth book in The Gryphon Chronicles, you already know that Jake and his friends have been through a hell of a time of it. And after the devastating end to the seventh book (no spoilers here!), all of our intrepid young heroes are reeling mentally and emotionally. Not able to take even a moment's respite, our group is thrown into yet another adventure - this one kept much closer to home at Merlin Hall. I really enjoyed seeing the character development that differed for each one of our characters - Jake's hotheadedness getting, quite literally, hotter, Dani coming into her own strength and learning to stand on her own two feet, Izzy discovering where her powers truly will lead her and what she is capable of - and trying to ferret out what changes within them all are of their own growth and what is Shem's doing!
Jake Benson's take on these characters truly brings them to life and allows the listener to fall seamlessly into the world that EG Foley has created throughout these novels. I will come back time and again to read and listen to these adventures and recommend them to friends with and without kids alike - there's truly something in these books for everyone and have been a great escape from the mundane world we are all trudging through. I can't wait until the next installment releases!

At first I was afraid, I was petrified...
Revisado: 01-27-23
I'll be the first to admit that when I latch onto a narrator's portrayal of characters in a series, I tend to latch on hard! So when the narrator of the first several Gryphon Chronicles books did not return for The Black Fortress, I can admit that I didn't give the first new narrator a good chance. But I really felt that he didn't quite "get" the characters. So, needless to say, when there was yet another new narrator for The Dragon Lord, I was equally skeptical. But!
BUT!
Jake Benson gets it! He really does seem to understand who the characters are and the little nuances that he adds serve to enhance the story in ways I was missing in the last book. He brings life to the various scenes and really makes you feel what his happening at any given point in the story. I was angry when the kids were angry, I cried - again, knowing what was coming - at the climax of the story, I really felt the emotions that these kids and their mentors and their pets - I actually really loved Tazaroc and Magpen almost as much as Teddy and Red! - are going through,
If you're looking at this book, you already love the series so I won't go into that too much here, except to say that this story is sooo important to the overall arc and to Jake's growth heading into the final showdown with the new leader of the Dark Side. I was a little sad that we didn't get to "hear" the True Story of How Jake Chewed {Gael} Out in the author's notes at the end (side note, go get the ebook just to read that little section, it's hilarious!), but I am stoked to know that the story hasn't wound down to the end quite yet!

Another thrilling adventure!
Revisado: 11-22-21
Sterling Nixon has done it again. As we tunnel back into EarthWorks, he grabs us immediately with the intrigue of a new adventure. This one definitely sneaks a little more politics into it and shows us a more behind the scenes look at the caste system our characters must navigate if they are to be successful in their endeavors. I actually found myself more angry at Sharlindrian's plight than at the demons around whose dastardly deeds this plot is centered. Can't wait until the next book comes out!

All good stories must come to an end...
Revisado: 08-30-21
And the end of the Traveler's League delivered on all counts (although, I may never forgive the author for what happened to Albion's orca!)! As we left off in The Pirates of Skuggi, Albion needs help and the only way to get it is through Smitty. But the Black Fox is on his own quest for redemption and he's going to need everyone's help to accomplish that. I especially liked the mystery surrounding the end of the story - there is enough of an open door for the reader to formulate their own opinion without feeling like the ending was rushed. And if that's not enough to bring you back to the final book in the main series, there's an age old battle going on between Neptune and the sea god Old Duppy to whet your interests. A father's love versus an old sea god's spite - what could go wrong?!? Will we find out what the Oracle meant in the Pirates of Skuggi? Will Smitty ever make amends with the Traveler's League? What will become of the Timepiece after all is said and done? Will Albion's past catch up with him in the worst way?
All this and more will be answered. So if you are still reading this review, why haven't you gone and bought the book yet???

The Timepiece Marches On!
Revisado: 03-29-21
Another great installment of the Traveler's League! In the Pirates of Skuggi, we meet a whole host of new characters! Reuben, the newest Traveler chosen by the timepiece, has been tossed into a brand new adventure full of intrigue and pirates who are bent on causing havoc anywhere they can. While I was thrown a bit by the jump in characters - we don't see anything of Hoops or the rest of the current League throughout the story except for a brief appearance by Eva Mae - that is the very nature of the timepiece's journey. I actually liked that there was no lead up to Reuben's story as it built in the same feelings he must be experiencing on his quest. The watch very clearly has a mind of its own and a specific path for each traveler - whether or not they want to keep jumping back into the two o'clock world to find their shadow! Reuben's path was clearly meant to cross with Albion's and his journey towards acceptance into the League will go through the Black Fox. What does Smitty have to do with the Pirates of Skuggi? Just who are the Pirates and why are they set on so much havoc? What does the Oracle have to say to Reuben and why do Oracles always have to speak in riddles???
Read on and find out!

In Traveler's Rest, you'll find friends...
Revisado: 03-16-21
But what happens when one of those friends is lured away from the light by the call of shadow wizards? You may have thought that the Traveler's League found happily ever after at the end of Braxo's Escape, but it seems that their trials are just truly beginning! It's one thing to fight your enemies in worlds far from home, but fighting your friends is much harder. Even (or especially!) when that friend has demons on his side and is cunning enough to have captained the Traveler's League for so long.
Jump back into the saga of the Timepiece and meet up with old friends and new enemies as Hoops and the others traverse the worlds trying to get one step ahead of Smitty and his minions. Will the League succeed? Will Traveler's Rest fall? Just what is going on in the 6:30 world while all of this is happening and why don't the grown ups ever seem to notice - or do they? Watch out for the reappearance of King Tut and his heroics! Hoops wouldn't have gotten far without Tut! I loved listening to this new adventure and getting to see the highs and lows that come with a quest like this one. It was refreshing to see the boys as human, as fallible, and as young men who are still just pre-teens and can't always be expected to make the right decisions. But hopefully they'll make the smart ones!
I'll admit that it took some time to get used to the new narrator as his choices for the voices are different, but different isn't bad and once I got used to him, enjoyed the new tone nearly as much as the old. If you go into this installment with an open mind - and ear - I think you'll find that the immersive world Nick Goss has created hooks you just as readily as the first two books did. Give it a chance and tell your friends!

Something Different This Way Comes!
Revisado: 01-24-21
Whenever I pick up a new book, I'm always curious as to how *this book* will be different than the rest. What makes Nickle Brickle'Bee different from every other fantasy story about an orphan (because what parent in their right mind would let their child face Voldemort or The Black Fortress or WICKED or Captain Hook or the gods if they had any say!) that lines my bookshelves? Well, for one - Nickle isn't exactly human! And he gets to race on a chariot with HEDGEHOGS! But seriously, the author draws you in with hints that Nickle isn't quite your run of the mill orphan from the start of the first chapter and leads you into the mystical world of EarthWorks so effortlessly that you can see the barracks and the cursed city and Grindlemire. You almost feel like Cynthia is shouting at you and Reckle Berry is challenging you and the fairies - oh, the fairy Queen is amazing!
But I guess you'll just have to read it to find out!

Sometimes Rules are Made to be Broken!
Revisado: 12-21-20
I'll admit, when I finished the end of The Timepiece and Hoops gave up the piece to Eva Mae, I was sad. I had a vested interest in Hoops and wanted to see more of him. Fear not! He has a big part to play still, and is prominent in Braxo's Escape. But even if he wasn't, I fell equally in love with precocious - and sometimes bratty! - Eva Mae in all her 8-year-old glory. This story, like its predecesor, draws you in so wholly that you can almost believe that the Traveler's League is just around the next corner. The characters are very real - flaws and all - and you end up wanting to both hug and yell at all of them! Except for maybe Braxo, but really, he kind of deserves what's coming to him. I can't wait to see what comes next for the Traveler's League after the fallout of Braxo's Escape!
