reset your view, parallax the age from this perspective
Revisado: 07-28-24
nico was amazing and a perfect model of what happens when all the backing is geared toward a privileged group over someone else. she was a beautiful woman and she was treated as nothing more than an object to be looked at and appreciated for her secured possibility. very rarely was she appreciated for her talent, nor was she coached to bring her talent and skill to the forefront. this is a great book to review about an age you lived through and thought you understood already.

Historia
Stephen Gordon (named by a father desperate for a son) is not like other girls: she hunts, she fences, she reads books, wears trousers, and longs to cut her hair. As she grows up amidst the stifling grandeur of Morton Hall, the locals begin to draw away from her, aware of some indefinable thing that sets her apart. And when Stephen Gordon reaches maturity, she falls passionately in love - with another woman.

Historia
This ninth volume of Favorite Science Fiction Stories is a little unusual, in that it includes a few stories that are not really that short, bordering on novellas. Titles include: "The Concrete Mixer" by Ray Bradbury, "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates, "Bedside Manner" by William Morrison, "The Inferiors" by Mari Wolf, "The Aggravation of Elmer" by Robert Arthur, "Conquest over Time" by Michael Shara, "The Virgin of Valkarion" by Poul Anderson, "No Charge for Alterations" by H. L. Gold.

maybe one of the best sets in this series
Revisado: 01-10-24
if you make it this far, congrats. there are some duds throughout, but this has some of the best stories.
my opinion says that
the concrete mixer, no charge for alterations, and Greylorn are the best three. but there's still farewell to the master, the inferiors (aka homo inferior), the Virgin of valkarion, the ambulance made two trips, and fondly Fahrenheit to work through as well.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Historia
The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

Historia
Magic needs a spark. And Maggie’s powers are especially fickle. With no one to help her learn to control her magic, the life debt that she owes stretches eternally over her head, with no way to repay it. Until she meets Griffin, the king’s champion, infamous for hunting down the draignochs that plague their kingdom. Neither has any idea of the destiny that they both carry, or that their meeting will set off a chain of events that will alter every aspect of the life they know - and all of history thereafter.

Historia
In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI's most wanted list. Assata Shakur's trial and conviction for the murder of a white State Trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata's detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign.

love it. want more of it. don't understand why this book was never mentioned in 88 when it first came out. Is it too early? she was 13 when the worst parts of her life were happening to her.

Historia
Kit Darling is a maid with a snooping problem. She’s the “invisible girl,” compelled to poke into her wealthy clients’ closely guarded lives. It’s a harmless hobby until Kit sees something she can’t unsee in the home of her brand-new clients: a secret so dark it could destroy the privileged couple expecting their first child. This makes Kit dangerous to the couple. In turn, it makes the couple—who might kill to keep their secret—dangerous to Kit.

Revenge!
Revisado: 06-09-23
spoilers. so obviously, there are trigger warnings attached. in the previous decades, a man will suffer a loss, and we will see the rest of the story through that man gaining vengeance. but when you consider the loss, it's important to think: what did he really lose.
in Gabrielle Union's We're going to need more wine memoir, she mentions an assault, and for whatever reason, he father keeps the newspaper clipping of the assault in his wallet for years. what purpose does that serve? so in Taken, Liam Neeson's daughter is kidnapped for sex trafficking purposes, and while her agency is what's at stake, we celebrate Liams revenge declaration.
at least in The Maid's Diary, we get revenge and attack from the first person's point of view. a reclamation of agency, a reversal on a grand scale. I think it could have been heavier on the suspense or the psychological thrills, and I expect a lot more of these are coming out already out there.
survivors deserve their time in the sun, but I caution that these stories are not good when they are male dominated either. I will give these a bi for about 2 decades, but after that, we need to find something new.
this one is worth the read.

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Historia
The year was 1381. The English government had failed its lower classes time and again with repressive labor laws and high taxes, and the peasants had had enough. In an unprecedented outburst of force, the peasants revolted against their leaders in a bloody march on London, burning buildings and killing government officials. The movement didn’t end there, though; it spread all over England, with Richard II trailing behind to suppress it. This audiobook delivers the fascinating history of this historical event that forever changed not just British history, but the world’s history.
