Historia
Forty thousand years ago, humanity fled a dying Earth. Traveling in massive arkships, these brave pioneers spread out across the galaxy to find a new home. After traveling thousands of light-years, one fleet of arkships arrived at Centauri, a dense cluster of stars with a vast array of potentially habitable planets. The survivors of Earth signaled to the remaining arkships that humanity had finally found its new home among the stars.

Poor world building, boring universe, & characters lack personality
Revisado: 10-15-24
Hamilton lost his mojo. The economics of this world make no sense (manual labor valuable in big planetary estates with androids doing other jobs? Give me a break). The politics make no sense (feudal crap with advanced technology where anybody can leave? Give me a break). Boring characters energized by class struggles (snoooooze). I set down about 15% of the way through, I should have set it down sooner.

Historia
In a hotel room in the middle of the night, Abby, a young feminist economist, lies awake next to her sleeping husband and daughter. Anxious that she is grossly underprepared for a talk she is presenting tomorrow on optimism and John Maynard Keynes, she has resolved to practice by using an ancient rhetorical method of assigning parts of her speech to different rooms in her house and has brought along a comforting albeit imaginary companion to keep her on track—Keynes himself.

I wish I had stopped reading
Revisado: 03-02-24
The author never talked to an economist before writing a book about an economist. I know a few left-wing female economists personally and they pepper econ terms throughout their lives just like all economists do. The protagonist here does not even though there were many opportunities to do so. She doesn’t even consider trade offs. Nobody reads Keynes, they use New Keynesian DSGE models. Also, the protagonist is clearly insane and very boring. I would have set the book down without finishing but I kept thinking there’d be a surprise ending where we’d find out what a terrible person the protagonist is . . . but no.

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?

First chapters excellent
Revisado: 02-10-17
The chapters on the early humans and anthropology were excellent. The chapters on ecology, social science, and technology (75% of the book) were awful. Serious thinkers don't base their economics of Karl Polanyi anymore because he was wrong about everything. Harari should have gotten that memo 25 years ago.
Overall, disappointing.
