Historia
Christmas comes early—far too early—to McCredie’s little Old Town bookshop in Edinburgh. It’s summer, but an American production company has decided that McCredie’s is the perfect location to film a very cheesy Christmas movie. After all, who can resist the charmingly narrow historic street with its Victorian grey stone buildings and warmly lit shop windows? Carmen Hogan, the bookshop’s manager, is amused and a bit horrified by the goings-on, but the money the studio is paying is too good to pass up.

A Disappointing Follow Up
Revisado: 11-17-23
I listened to The Christmas Bookshop and very much enjoyed it all the way around; the characters, the setting and the story. I found Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop missing much of the charm of its predecessor. The story meandered and was filled with too much description and introspection. I found myself fast forwarding just to get through some sections. I also wanted to bang several of the characters head's together. This is not a book I would recommend.

Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where "Fun is Guaranteed!" But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares.

Do Not Waste Your Time
Revisado: 02-01-23
Even the fact that I did not have to use a credit for this book could not make it worth my time. Unbelievable premise and ridiculous characters. I love Luke Daniels as a narrator and he is the ONLY reason I kept listening as long as I did. The female narrator had an annoying habit of clearing her throat that I thought was a quirk of the first character she was voicing, but it continued into the interviews of the other characters. The whole thing is just absurd. A few days into the disaster and hands are being cut off and heads are set on spikes. I do not have a high opinion of humanity, but the descent into murder and torture within 72 hours? Stay away from this one.

If you are looking for a heartwarming story of the goodness of neighbors and wisdom of children, I highly recommend this lovely novella. I found myself wishing it was longer so I could spend more time with the characters.

I have lost count of the number of times I have listened to this series. Love the characters, storyline and narrator. Could we just arrange for Julia Whelan to narrate every audio book?

An Apocalypse for the Optimist
Revisado: 07-19-20
I had my doubts about listening to a book about a virus that wipes out humanity at this point in time, but decided to give it a try because of the narrator. Scott Brick is one of the best. The story was a disappointment. Very little action, no bad actors, no bad luck, just sunshine and rainbows all the way to their destination, with a vacation stop or two on the way. Because of course one has to stop at the Statue of Liberty on their way to their son who may or not be alive; but of course he would be, in this story anyway. This is an apocalypse for those who prefer rose colored glasses, oh and cooking; let's not forget that. I was never so tired of hearing about what people were eating or how it was prepared. Maybe this is a good point of view on an extinction event, but for me it was far too sanitized. Scott Brick was the only reason I kept listening to the end.

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-15-19
I could not finish this book. The characters were flat and downright silly, from Aimee (the lead), to her friends, family and the evil villains. The writing was poor and the narration horrible; very robotic. I increased the listening speed to try and get through it faster and the only result of that was a more robotic narration. I went back to the reviews to TRY and find a spoiler so I would not have to subject myself to the rest of the book. Sadly, the individual who wrote the synopsis had better skills than the author. To find out there are two more books in this saga was a surprise to me. Why is it so many authors write in a series? I miss reading a book that is a stand alone story...beginning, middle and end.

Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.

Wanted to love this book, but...
Revisado: 02-06-19
I am a huge fan of both Liane Moriarty and Caroline Lee. Unfortunately, Ms. Moriarty's past two novels have fallen flat for me. I wanted to love this book; I wanted to love Frances. And at first, I did. But as the story progressed, things took a very strange turn and one character became absurd, insane and hateful. The guests as the spa were not nearly as angry as they should have been after their experience and the punishment did NOT fit the crime. I thought that with "Truly, Madly, Guilty" the author was trying to recreate "Big Little Lies". With this book, I think she was trying to do something entirely different, and it failed. Caroline Lee does a good job with the narration, but she was pretty much on her own trying to save this one.

Charming and quirky; I loved Eleanor by the end.
Revisado: 06-27-17
I was a bit put off by Eleanor at the beginning but as she revealed herself, it was impossible not to come to love her and enjoy her journey. One chance encounter with her co-worker and an injured elderly man and her whole world changes. The accents were hard to get used to but were expertly done and greatly enhanced the story. All around a great book.

Revisado: 12-15-16
I almost gave up on this book several times. The characters are not likable and found myself frustrated with them often. Also not fond of the narrator. I will not seek out her other works as I often do after listening to a narrator for the first time. If not for the ending two stars are what I feel the book would merit.
