Historia
According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan.

Welp, that was painful
Revisado: 08-16-23
Hard to listen to this collection of feeble skits. The whole thing is like bad Monty Python... or like the average sitcom. Broad, cheesy humor. I'm surprised the book has so many fans.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

You can’t account for taste…
Revisado: 11-27-22
I have loved this book for years, and I assumed most readers recognized it as a landmark achievement in fantasy, on the level of The Lord of the Rings. So I’m very surprised to see the negative reviews. Ok, sure, it’s a slow story, but it’s rich. It’s full of comedy and adventure and fun characters. But I guess some people just don’t jive with it. Alas for them! They are missing out!

Not as good as Mythos
Revisado: 09-20-22
Heroes is not as good as its predecessor. But that’s not Stephen Fry’s fault. The stories of the heroes are monotonous. They face monster after monster, then they suffer horribly. Again and again. Fry’s charm and wit can only do so much. They can’t make the monotony less monotonous.

A mixed bag
Revisado: 05-21-22
The story had a great beginning and ending, but the middle was a slog. The narrator at first felt corny, but his voice was right for the story. He did a good job.

Historia
For more than 25 years, David Sedaris has been carving out a unique literary space, virtually creating his own genre. A Sedaris story may seem confessional, but is also highly attuned to the world outside. It opens our eyes to what is at absurd and moving about our daily existence. And it is almost impossible to listen without laughing.

The audiobook bunches the stories up into artificial chapters. No titles, no help whatsoever to find the story you want. It’s very silly. But I’m sure it saved the audio engineer some time…

A wonderful story during Covid
Revisado: 05-01-21
I listened to this last year at the height of Covid, isolated in my house. It was marvelous. The first half is better than the second half (mostly because Dantes has to be noble and not REALLY get revenge). But still... the chill you get up your spine when you know what the villains do not: that they are in the company of their victim, and he is entrapping them. Oof. So good.

Second-best deal on Audible
Revisado: 03-22-21
The stories are wonderful, as always, and these classic recordings are icing on the cake. My favorite is The Horse and His Boy, as thrilling an adventure story as you will find in this world or any other.
P.S. The first-best deal is Stephen Fry reading all of Sherlock Holmes.

Great ideas often come from a simple spark: A soccer player on the New Zealand national team notices all the unused wool his country produces and figures out a way to turn them into shoes (Allbirds). A former Buddhist monk decides the very best way to spread his mindfulness teachings is by launching an app (Headspace). A sandwich cart vendor finds a way to reuse leftover pita bread and turns it into a multimillion-dollar business (Stacy’s Pita Chips).

But the way he speaks?
Revisado: 03-18-21
It’s full of inspiring stories and pearls of wisdom. But we are only hearing about successes. We would learn even more if Guy Raz looked at failures too.
But my bigger complaint? Is the way the author speaks. When he goes up on every other sentence? It’s very annoying. I’m sure he is a nice guy? So I don’t mean to be harsh. But after a while? You want to hurt him.

Historia
The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Narrator gets worse and worse
Revisado: 03-11-21
At first I wondered what all the negative reviews we’re talking about. The narrator seemed fine to me. As the book went on, something strange happened to his voice. It was like he stopped taking in the meaning of the words and was just reading the words on autopilot. It became very difficult to understand because the emphasis was constantly in the wrong place, pauses were oddly robotic... yeah, that’s a good word overall. Robotic. The guy started to sound like a robot.
