Historia
Following the death of her husband, Lady Darby has taken refuge at her sister's estate, finding solace in her passion for painting. But when one of the house guests is murdered, her brother-in-law asks her to aid the insufferable Sebastian Gage - a fellow guest with some experience as an inquiry agent. Historia
In a startling departure, James Lee Burke has written an epic story of love, hate, and survival set against the tumultuous background of the Civil War and Reconstruction. Booklist calls White Doves "an epic filmed in tight focus, taking us from secession to Reconstruction at an intensely personal level."

Graphic Violence
Revisado: 09-09-16
I love the reader's voice which is why I chose the novel. I should have guessed a Civil War novel would be full of graphic violence.

Historia
Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West—its otherworldly flora and fauna, its rugged loggers and bridge builders—this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life. It tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world.

Too violent

Hate speech was hard to listen to. Even in a historical context. The story was uneven so I only got into the first hour of it.

Historia
Here is the astonishing true story of Ruth Harkness, the Manhattan bohemian socialite who, against all but impossible odds, trekked to Tibet in 1936 to capture the most mysterious animal of the day: a bear that had for countless centuries lived in secret in the labyrinth of lonely cold mountains. In The Lady and the Panda, Vicki Constantine Croke gives us the remarkable account of Ruth Harkness and her extraordinary journey, and restores Harkness to her rightful place along with Sacajawea, Nellie Bly, and Amelia Earhart as one of the great woman adventurers of all time.

Historia
Acclaimed author Andrei Cherny tells the gripping saga of a rag-tag band of Americans - with limited resources and little hope for success - keeping West Berliners alive in the face of Soviet tyranny, winning the hearts and minds of former enemies, and giving the world a shining example of fundamental goodness.

Surprising and rich with historic detail.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely! It was much more dense than the title hinted at---and it filled in a lot of blanks in my own understanding of history surrounding WWII.
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Davis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Jonathan is wonderful. He brings the work to life.

What did you love best about The Glassblower of Murano?
The romance, the ties between history and present day.
What about Cristian Solimeno and Kate Magowan ’s performance did you like?
The choice to have two readers, one for each period in time made it so much easier to follow. They also both brought the words to life, rich with imagery while also handling the character voice changes as needed.

Horrible reader.
Revisado: 12-29-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I love this era and the history and had high hopes. But the reader is so awful with no training and the constant downward inflection that I kept falling asleep.
What was most disappointing about Alexandra Lapierre’s story?
Hard to tell since the reader was so awful. I got so lost, maybe editing would help. Impossible to finish it.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Nick Podehl?
Stick to modern stuff "dude".
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. How do I return it?
