Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Good story, but production was awesome!
Revisado: 10-12-24
I enjoyed this book enough to recommend it to others, but the real impressive thing was the production of it. The segments of the podcast REALLY sounded like a podcast. The acting was SUPERB. I really enjoyed the podcast sections so much that I almost wish this was a real podcast. That was really well done, and I would highly recommend anyone who plans to read this book to get the audiobook instead of reading it, just because it was so well done. There are times when the audiobook is the best way to read it, and this is one of them.

I love this audiobook so much. I would highly recommend the reader, the story, and the whole performance. I would recommend this as a listen 100 times over reading the book yourself. It is so good and so rich. Audible is the only way to experience this. Thank you for an incredible listen!!!

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Whoa Netty!
Revisado: 01-26-24
This whole story grabbed me from beginning to end. I couldn’t stop listening. I am a huge fan of this actress and her work, and the way she tells this story is just so so so gripping. She is in her element here! I hope she continues to write. Snappy, humorous, even as it hints at her awareness of the abuses she suffered. She is so good at recalling specific memories and building a captivating picture of her mother that isn’t one dimensional. I love hearing her tell it too, because her impressions of Miranda Cosgrove are so spot on that I have to believe she imitates everyone in her life as perfectly as that. She even had her giggle down. Amazing book. Six stars for narration if I could give it! Bigger fan than ever, not of Sam Puckett, but of Jennette McCurdy. What a woman!

Overall I really enjoyed it
Revisado: 06-26-23
It was a fun story, at times somewhat serious, but those bits were necessary to make the plot move forward. I enjoyed learning more about India and caste and the way religion was portrayed was interesting. I must note that I am not Indian, so therefore I cannot comment on the accent, but the narrator did a better job than I could have reading the book for myself, so it made it more enjoyable to listen. I thought the main character was very interesting, though at times she was frustrating. None of the characters are what I would call “likable,” except maybe Kareem (unsure on spelling). However, none were perfect or completely unredeemable either. Book got a little lost in the weeds when the main character started moralizing on caste, and I tended to tune out (unintentionally), but I did learn a lot.

I am very good at deciphering context clues, so the ending was not a surprise for me, but what storytelling! And may I say that the actors who read this book were PHENOMENAL. Beyond the best readers I have ever heard in a book. The passion and pain was evident in their voices. So good, kept me wanting to listen forever!!!

I very much enjoyed getting to hear the authors narrate their own book. I have heard their other audiobooks and wondered what these ladies were really like, so for me it was like finally getting to meet some rock stars. The book also has some really great ideas for how to take the principles of talking to kids and apply them to older children.

A Good Plan . . . For sneaky, resentful kids
Revisado: 08-04-21
This book approaches parenting with an authoritative approach. Parents are the boss, and anyone who crosses them can go stand in a corner. To begin with, I am suspicious of a discipline method that involves time outs, as I think time outs do not work, though I appreciate and applaud this psychologists attempts to steer parents away from corporal punishment. However, this book does nothing to help kids problem solve, to see the problems with their own behavior, to view themselves as part of a team, negotiate peace or stand up for themselves. This approach is a “parents get peace at all costs, even to child development long term. Will kids always do what mom or dad want them to? No. And will kids try to hide anything from mom or dad that might lead to counting? Yes. Siblings learn not to fight . . . In front of mom or dad. But do they learn how to get along? No. Counting both kids just ensures they will take the fight out of ear shot and maybe beat the crap out of each other in secret. The feelings of the children are never acknowledged and this book suggests that such an approach is stupid. Feelings don’t matter. Only obedience. Like your kid is a unique pet. Overall, I feel like this advice might work in a culture with authoritative family structure (mom obeys dad, kids obey mom and dad), but it is not good for child psychological development and well being.
A MUCH better book is “How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen.” That book gets to the heart of how people tick. We want to feel heard, have empathy, and solutions that kids help come up with are much more likely to work. On top of that, EVERY story in How to Talk is from a REAL family, in a REAL circumstance. The story “examples” provided by this book is extremely contrived, like someone trying to write about children who hasn’t been around children but seen them on TV. None of the examples are real, as is evidenced by the fact that he will give each scenario THREE TIMES or more, each with a different outcome.
This author has a very disrespectful view of children that sees them as less than human and therefore shouldn’t be treated as autonomous beings or given any respect. It was frustrating to hear him constantly talking about children as if they are too dumb to understand how parents want them to behave but also smart enough to be the sneakiest little demons on the planet at getting what they want out of mom and dad (begging, badgering, buttering you up, being a martyr). I think he meant that parents get no where with lectures, which I can agree with, but that doesn’t mean children can’t reason or problem solve.
Overall, I just was really disappointed I purchased this book. I feel like this “solution” seems under-researched and doesn’t seem to take into account that your young child will eventually be a teenager that won’t respond to such tactics and more, an adult who won’t know how to get what they want except to take punitive action against others. Save your credits or your money and get something else.

This book is so much helpful information and it was exactly what I was hoping it would be! I loved reading it into it and I did both. There’s so much to absorb here for an American parent who is looking to do things in a different way! It has totally transformed the way that I think about parenting.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

For those who love fantasy, jackpot!
Revisado: 08-02-16
This novel is reminiscent of what would happen if a college aged American Harry Potter was actually sorted into Slytherin and fell in love with Hermione, but grew up obsessed with The Chronicles of Narnia and discovered one day that it was possible to go there and that the tales were all true. (Names and dates changed to protect the innocent, of course!)
Very fun, with frequent references to other fantasy series that makes it a little meta cognitive about what genre it is in. The reader is great, but he can lull you right to sleep if you are not careful.

We live in a world that's very different from the one in which Emily Post came of age. Many of us who are nice (but who also sometimes say "f*ck") are frequently at a loss for guidelines about how to be a good person who deals effectively with the onslaught of rudeness we all encounter. To lead us through this this miasma of modern manners, syndicated columnist Amy Alkon - The Advice Goddess - gives us a new set of manners for our 21st-century lives.

Very reasonable advice!
Revisado: 06-17-15
I think Amy gives very reasonable and fair advice to readers and lays out a fairly clear plan for being mannerly in all situations. At one point, the books does seem heavy on dating advice and another chapter seems more like "how good people who sometimes say fuck can avoid being arrested," but over all, I really enjoyed it.
