Historia
Bertrand Russell wrote that mathematics can exalt "as surely as poetry". This is especially true of one equation: ei(pi) + 1 = 0, the brainchild of Leonhard Euler, the Mozart of mathematics. More than two centuries after Euler's death, it is still regarded as a conceptual diamond of unsurpassed beauty. Called Euler's identity, or God's equation, it includes just five numbers but represents an astonishing revelation of hidden connections.

Best and most engaging book on math I've read
Revisado: 02-17-24
Stipp does a great job of explaining the background and relationship between five of the most interesting numbers in math (i, pi, e, 0 and 1). He doesn't overdo the biography of Euler, but sketches a very happy genius all the same. Highly recommended.

Historia
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

Excellent
Revisado: 07-01-23
This is a great book, full of real hard won wisdom. I have spent 30 years in manufacturing, and I was impressed at the clear and practical approaches and techniques that are described. Salatin presents deep expertise across multiple dimensions of farming. Importantly, he maintains a persistent focus on being profitable, prioritizing marketing and cost control. The "synergies" of organic diversity in his approach make all the difference. He is also deeply philosophical about farming, and advocates for the life blessings of this challenging field. I appreciated that he is realistic about the commitment necessary to be successful.

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Historia
Author Jeremy Gray provides a comprehensive and intellectually stimulating introduction to Bernhard Riemann’s life and paradigm-defining work. Beginning with his early influences - in particular, his relationship with his renowned predecessor Carl Friedrich Gauss - Gray goes on to explore Riemann’s specific contributions to geometry, functions of a complex variable, prime numbers, and functions of a real variable, which opened the way to discovering the limits of the calculus.

Amazed that I could follow
Revisado: 02-23-21
This book is hard to follow in audible form, as the steps in the development of Riemann's work are articulated in actual formulas. And the formulas are not simple. At the same time, you can understand the progression of mapping a sphere onto a plane, and then mapping any complex surface onto a plane as well as how to analyze surfaces with 4+ dimensions.. This is a crucial step from map-making to Einstein's relativity and gravitational waves. Not for the faint of heart - but you can actually understand the progression. I will need to buy the paper version to review the calculations.

Historia
China and America are world powers without serious rivals. They eye each other warily across the Pacific; they communicate poorly; there seems little natural empathy. A massive geopolitical contest has begun. America prizes freedom; China values freedom from chaos. America values strategic decisiveness; China values patience.America is becoming society of lasting inequality; China a meritocracy. America has abandoned multilateralism; China welcomes it.

Worthwhile.
Revisado: 02-04-21
Most books I've read on US/China relations are firmly from the US point of view. Mahbubani offers a balanced analysis, with description and critique of both US and China policy. But the real value is in the author's clear understanding of the Chinese (or CCP) perspective and tone. Some reviewers call this Chinese propaganda, but I think Mahbubani has grasped and faithfully recounts China's positions and postures across a broad range of flashpoints. Not that I agree with China's positions. In the West the idea that China would rise to parity and perhaps supremacy is viewed with alarm. Mahbubani presents the very plausible case that, to the Chinese, such a rise would be natural and appropriate. Recommended.

Here are 11 short stories and one novella by Anton Chekhov, one of the finest masters of what is acknowledged as a difficult genre. There is the richly comic "Oh! The Etymologicon is a completely unauthorized guide to the strange underpinnings of the English language. It explains: How you get from “gruntled” to “disgruntled”; why you are absolutely right to believe that your meager salary barely covers “money for salt”; how the biggest chain of coffee shops in the world (hint: Seattle) connects to whaling in Nantucket; and what precisely the Rolling Stones have to do with gardening.

Historia
Since 2014, international monetary agencies have been issuing warnings to a small group of finance ministers, banks, and private equity funds: The US government's cowardly choices not to prosecute J.P. Morgan and its ilk and to bloat the economy with a $4 trillion injection of easy credit are driving us headlong toward a cliff. As Rickards shows in this frightening, meticulously researched book, governments around the world have no compunction about conspiring against their citizens.

Revisado: 12-12-16
Rickards provides a well researched framework that raises serious questions about global financial stability, as well as the ability of policy elites to recognize and deal with the troubling dynamic. His analysis fits well with the turbulence that we observe in today's world and gives grave warnings that the pressures are building - not receding. He provides a wealth of facts as well as longer term historical context. His assessment is dire, but enormously compelling. This book should not be missed.
