Loved it.

I can’t say enough good things about this book. Not only is an amazingly well written, but the story as well crafted. And it has the perfect amount of supernatural elements built-in. I loved it.

Tedious and exhausting
Revisado: 02-16-25
If I had been reading this book and not listening to it, I would’ve given up on it. I only didn’t because I was able to listen to it while I cleaned my house and cook dinner, etc. It is overly long. Probably by three times. I don’t know what happened to the editor of this book, but he or she did not do his or her job. Many of the characters are under developed. The story started with a beginning that was so reminiscent of The Stand that I thought it was derivative. Later, I don’t even know what happened. It turned into some kind of a Adam and Eve sort of story. It is very cartoony in places, as well. I’d kinda like it if they would edit out the N word to make it less offensive to modern audiences. I am not a fan.

Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

Really outstanding contemporary horror
Revisado: 10-11-24
I really enjoyed this book. I love that the author combined a very Gothic Italian villa setting with a modern day family, complete with their iPhones and laptops. And it was pretty scary, as well. I’m a horror aficionado, and I’m picky. But this book really surprised me, coming from a relatively unknown author. I think Miss Thorne will go far. There were areas that probably could’ve been condensed (around 2/3 of the way through). But by the end, I wasn’t sorry that I stuck with it, because the payoff was there. And it captures the dysfunction of a family really well. Great story, great ambience, great characters, great narrator. Highly recommend.

A girl and her mother have been on the run for sixteen years, from the monster they left in their kitchen with a knife in his throat and the police who want to make them pay for his death. Home is now a van with four flat tires in a junkyard by the edge of the Brisbane River. The girl has no name, because names are dangerous when you're on the run. But she has a dream.

Trent Dalton is a Titan of Literature
Revisado: 09-28-24
Trent Dalton's novels are like epic poems. Every word is intentional, like a brush stroke of an elaborate painting. I am a writer (non fiction). When I read Trent Dalton, I want to cry. It’s so moving, so beautiful, and I know I’ll never be able to be a 10th of the writer he is. :-) I expect this man will win many, many prizes in his lifetime. And I can’t wait for his next masterpiece.
This book is brilliant. Read it.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Tedious at best ….annoying at worst
Revisado: 05-07-24
A book with at least 1000 superfluous footnotes. Obviously a first novel. Long way to go to get to an anti-climactic ending. Narrator was fabulous. Overall, I regret my purchase on this one.

So glad I stumbled across the Netflix series and by extension this novel. So well written. Incredible dialogue, larger than life characters (many of whom are real!), and brilliant description. What a gift! ❤️

Sophomoric, derivative trash
Revisado: 12-16-23
I'm not even sure where to start, so I'll start with a compliment. The narrator crushed it. Even changed up his voice to distinguish when voices were coming through the phone or over the radio. He did a fabulous job with all the various characters, as well. That's the best I can say about this steaming pile of crap.
This book felt like a high school kid tried to rewrite Stephen King's "It" and "The Stand," keeping a thesaurus on his lap as he went. Oozing with cliché, there wasn't an iota of originality anywhere. I finally quit, with 30 minutes to go. I don't even care how it ended.
The most encouraging thing about this book is the fact that even the most mediocre hack has the opportunity to do a better job.
To the editor: you should be ashamed of yourself. I don't know if it was Koontz' name that had you too intimidated to do your job, but...do better. Be better. You were the gatekeeper.
What a disappointment.

Slow burn, some worthy horror, kinda weird ending
Revisado: 11-13-17
Started slowly, grew into some truly frightening horror, then took an odd left turn. I thought another book crashed into the one I was reading... Then, about a half hour later, saw where it was going. I'll never forget this book, but I will also never re-read it. Narrator is FABULOUS. I cannot believe the range of voices and accents he can do. Outstanding! I'm not sure whether to recommend this or not. If you are partial to historical fiction, you'll love it. If you're just up for a fast moving horror story, maybe you should pass on this one.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

I'm not a history buff, a conspiracy theorist, or even an avid sci fi reader. But I was enthralled from beginning to end. The main character is very likeable, the story never stops. Love, love, love it. The narration was also great. I even enjoyed the epilogue by the author. Highly recommend!
