Revisado: 11-16-24
I'm a big fan of Steve Berry books. I'm waiting now for him to release another one. Meanwhile, I'm rereading my collection. This is either the 2nd or 3rd time I've read this one. I remembered really enjoying this story but as a Christian, I didn't find his relegation of the resurrection of Christ as mythical enjoyable. From his other books, I surmised that Berry might be a Christian. But a "Christian" that doesn't believe in the resurrection of Christ seems rather pointless. I wouldn't have brought it up but this assertion becomes more evident throughout the book. My approval of something or someone isn't required for me to enjoy them. For some reason, I don't remember these opinions being so prevalent before.
Other than that, it is an enjoyable story. Keep in mind Berry is introducing all of these characters for the first time. You'll come to know Stephanie, Cotton, Cassiopeia, Henrich, and others well if you get hooked on the Cotton Malone series as I have.
Lastly, I would've rated this book much higher had Berry chosen not to insert himself in the question of Christ's deity. I don't remember eating any Steve Berry book lower than a 4 before. Don't worry. I think you'll find all of his other books better than this one.

I'm at chpt 12 and nothing about the story has reached out and grabbed me yet. If it wasn't for Scott Brick's excellent narration, I'm pretty sure I would've given up by now. I'm not familiar with this author but I'm a big fan of Scott Brick. Since Scott was reading it and the 4+ rating by others I decided to take a chance on it. I'll give it a few more chapters hoping at some point the story will become interesting. So far, I'm underwhelmed.

Historia
Against all odds we have made it into the last half of the 1990s. The Cold War looks solved, Arabs and Jews are talking, confrontation is on the wane. In this new harmony, one discord - what becomes of unemployed terrorists? You can bet they aren't going to retire quietly. Shunned by the Soviets, isolated by Middle Eastern realignment, one cadre hits on a scheme to jump-start the war machine. It's brilliant in its simplicity. With a single act they bring the world to nuclear boil. Jack Ryan and Dan Murray sweat to defuse a cataclysmic response.

Russian names are hard to figure out.
Revisado: 01-10-24
Clancy mastered this Cold War genre. The stories are always top notch. He does like to weave an intricate plot with lots and lots of characters. I'm reading the Jack Ryan series in timeline order. I've read 5 or 6 Clancy novels so I'm familiar with his style and know that he does enjoy a cast of hundreds, if not thousands (slight exaggeration on my part. Let's say scores of characters.) But gimme a break, Tom! Eleventy-seven Russian names to remember! By the time I was starting to remember the most important ones, the book was over.
Kidding aside, this is one of the best of the series so far. I highly recommend it. 5 stars for the story! I gave 4 for the performance. I'm a Scott Brick fan. I think this was my first time hearing this guy read. It looks like he read several of this series, so I'd better get used to him. I am. I did like the narrator much better by the end of the book, but to me, he's no Scott Brick.
I think if I'd read, rather than listened to this novel I'd have solved both complaints. Seeing those Russian names printed out makes it easier for me to remember. Plus, if I still don't like the reader, there may be deeper problems! 😂

1 star is me being generous
Revisado: 08-15-22
What an overhyped piece of garbage. First, let me say I'm a Christian. If this book was listed as some sort of spiritually uplifting book, it might get 2 stars. Again, me being generous. I've read enthralling Christian books. This isnt one of them. I'm about 30 chapters into it and it is just boring me to tears. Want to read a wonderful book about a Christian? Read Unbroken. That story is everything this one promises but isn't.

Historia
Geary believed in the Alliance. Even when he uncovered overwhelming evidence that the highest echelons of the government and fleet command were involved in secret programs and prison camps, he believed it was worth saving. He believed his duty was to see that justice was served even though some factions feared that revealing the truth would cause the Alliance to crumble. But after narrowly surviving two assassination attempts when he brings evidence of the misdeeds to the capital star system, Geary realizes that some want to get rid of him.

It's a good read, but not great.
Revisado: 12-29-21
The performance was great, like the previous books. However, I found this plot relatively flat, predictable with an underwhelming conclusion.
One thing that has concerned me about this series, is that they have seemingly gelded the once all-knowing, Admiral Blackjack Geary. It would seem Geary is no longer capable of making a command decision without Tanya's input. If he should permanently lose his abilities to lead, maybe Tanya should replace him as admiral and Geary can become a house-husband.
It's still an excellent book. I just found the story to be sub-par as compared to the other installments in this series.
