a dark and realistic take on sexual abuse

This book impacted me more than I can even say. it was beautifully crafted and thought out. the psychological impact for the main characters and everyone near them was so accurate and effortlessly realistic.

this was a unique take on a zombie break out mixed with a love story. it felt both realistic and natural for the development of the two main characters. beautiful ending that broke my heart
also lol'd at the kingdom hearts reference.

But one American boy draws her like no other. The two are pulled into a world of eerie doll rituals and dark Shinto exorcisms that will take them from the American Midwest to the remote valleys and shrines of Aomori, Japan. The boy is not a monster, but something evil writhes beneath his skin, trapped by a series of intricate tattoos.

A fun an interesting listen
Revisado: 04-02-24
This story kept me hooked from the very beginning to the end. I particularly enjoyed the child abusers meeting their ends, especially the one based on a real case that happened in Japan.
Being from the POV of the spirit made the story flow beautifully.

Not a traditional love story, but still powerful
Revisado: 03-06-24
I've read a ton of mixed reviews as went along listening to this novel. At first, I agreed with those pointing fingers that this book is pro pedophilia. Then as I went along, it showed me more and more what a true connection these two characters had. I know it's hard to see past, but just remember... this isn't real. It's ok to be disgusted but it's also ok to love the story in it's whole form. Literature doesn't always line up with our beliefs or values.
Truly an interesting listen.

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Unreliable Narrator and dark core
Revisado: 11-04-23
A very long winded and overly detailed novel. it did capture the personalities well throughout the story, but i felt some details were a bit.. unnecessary.
When listening, please keep in mind the narrator is unreliable. Look through how he portrays Lolita as charming and manipulative. It's a very dark novel and not for everyone, but at its core it's a very a unique story.

Three low-income families have been given a handsome retainer to join Geraldine Borden for a day at her cliffside estate. All the parents must do to collect the rest of their money is allow their children to test out the revolutionary playground equipment Geraldine has been working on for decades. But there’s a reason the structures in the bowels of her gothic castle have taken so long to develop—they were never meant to see the light of day.

This is a unique plot that serves such twisted perspectives. The author holds nothing back as he puts these characters through little hell.
It's like if Saw.. but for kids!
Honestly, the only thing that made me cringe was the description of the, and I quote, "fermented beaver."

A beautiful web of stories
Revisado: 08-13-23
At first I was unsure if I'd feel attached to Rufus and Mateo when knowing that the ending is written out right in the title. but I was so wrong.
This is a tragic love story that truly knows how to pull on all the right heart strings. You'll laugh, smile and cry with them as these boys cope with loss.
There are so many plots, all of which interlink and paint such a broad but intricate story. I just can't say enough how much I loved this masterpiece

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Simple, but beautiful
Revisado: 02-20-23
*spoilers*
The description of the story really had very little to do with the actual plot. That's not always a bad thing, but I guess I expected Marcellus to be more involved in unravelling what happened to Tova's son - but she did that on her own.
I've seen others mention that Cameron's character was pretty unlikeable, which is the point. I get it. But it definitely felt like.. forced character development? I'm not sure how else to put it, but he definitely was the low point of the book for me.
Either way, I was rooting for the happy ending they all inevitably got. Marcellus's last words had me in tears. He was by far the best character in the entire book.
He also used the word 'cuckold' which absolutely sent me.
I would certainly recommend giving this a listen.

Probably better read than listened to
Revisado: 01-11-23
This story was not only creepy and unsettling, but it had some very beautiful imagery (even if disturbing).
The characters were very hard to decipher from one another, just from how similarly they wrote to each other. Due to that reason, it was easy to get lost on who said what.
I also felt like the story ended kind of abruptly.
Overall though, it kept my interest and had me wondering and waiting for what twist would come next.
