Historia
For 20 years, gang unit detectives Tim Brennan and Robert Ladd patrolled the streets of Compton. They witnessed the birth and rise of gangsta rap with acts they knew personally, such as N.W.A and D.J. Quik; dealt firsthand with the chaos of the L.A. riots, its aftermath, and the gang truce that followed; were involved in the investigations of the murders of hip-hop stars Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., and were major players in an all-out tug-of-war with City Hall that ultimately resulted in the permanent shut-down of the Compton Police Department.

Amazing story
Revisado: 04-10-25
What an insightful story about one of the most misunderstood cities and its police force in America and its hip hop relevance. I believe this would make for a perfect Netflix show. The real life “Colors”

Historia
Oakland, California, 1983: a city churning with violent crime and racial conflict. Officer Hanson, a Vietnam veteran, has abandoned academia for the life-and-death clarity of police work, a way to live with the demons that followed him home from the war. But Hanson knows that justice requires more than simply enforcing the penal code. He believes in becoming a part of the community he serves - which is why, unlike most officers, he chooses to live in the same town where he works. This strategy serves him well...to a point. He forges a precarious friendship with the drug king of East Oakland.

An absolute amazing story
Revisado: 03-12-25
This book was exceptionally well-written, and the audio narration was truly outstanding. The author masterfully captured the essence of East Oakland, bringing the setting to life with remarkable authenticity. The historical context felt incredibly real, making the story even more immersive. I couldn’t stop listening to the audiobook.

Historia
New York City has long been a destination for rebels and rule breakers, artists, writers, and other hopefuls longing to be part of its rich cultural exchange and unique social fabric. But today, modern gentrification is transforming the city from an exceptional, iconoclastic metropolis into a suburbanized luxury zone. Blogger and cultural commentator Jeremiah Moss leads us on a colorful guided tour of the most changed parts of town lovingly eulogizing iconic institutions as they're replaced with soulless upscale boutiques, luxury condo towers, and suburban chains.

One time read only.

As a New Yorker, I sympathize with Jeremiah. I left the Bronx at a real early age and remember a New York that was plight ridden.
Jeremiah did a terrific job in his research. The book is rather long, and at times Jeremiah becomes rather whiny. The narration of the book was exceptional.
The reason I chose to give this book a three star rating, simply because of the length.
