Disappointing read
Revisado: 03-09-24
Honestly, it's super predictable and lacking any kind of hook. Rice used to be so fun, sophisticated and romantic. This story is a stodgy, outdated, paint-by-numbers, elitist, Werewolf fairy tale. I got so bored I couldn't finish the last two chapters.

While the science is outdated, the story is well written and captivating. I liked the characters and it plays out like a 90s action movie. Not that scary, in my opinion.

Four strangers and six weeks: this is all that separates Mara from one life-changing payday. She was surprised when reality TV producers came knocking at Primal Instinct—the survival school where she teaches rich clients not to die during a night outdoors—and even more shocked to be cast in their new show, Civilization. Now she just has to live off the land with her fellow survivors for long enough to get the prize money.

This was really more of a LGBTQ+ love story and less of an adventure story. The author creates a mystery of why all the crew abandon the contestants in a reality survival show to starve but offers up a weak conclusion. It's a great premise, but then it turns into a watered down coming out story. It got me through a work trip in the mountains but I wanted more out of it.

Historia
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Gory and disturbing horror story.
Revisado: 10-20-21
Well written story that is a bit of a knock off of Lord Of The Flies but without any philosophical depth. It's body horror with extra gross factor, if that's your thing. If so, this is a well crafted, icky tale about an infectious parasite that devastates the victim. The narrator was a bit too deadpan for me.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Thirty years ago, Wilde was found as a boy living feral in the woods, with no memory of his past. Now an adult, he still doesn't know where he comes from, and another child has gone missing. No one seems to take Naomi Pine's disappearance seriously, not even her father - with one exception. Hester Crimstein, a television criminal attorney, knows through her grandson that Naomi was relentlessly bullied at school. Hester asks Wilde - with whom she shares a tragic connection - to use his unique skills to help find Naomi.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

A misogynous apocalyptic fantasy for incels.
Revisado: 01-17-20
Wow. If you want thought provoking and rich storytelling, skip this pile of drivel. I'm not sure what made me stop listening more, the overly simplistic and repetitive prose, or the fact that the main character glorifies toxic male dominance, while supposedly being on the Asberger's spectrum. Odd Billy Todd is the son of paranoid preppers and trained to the teeth on survival tactics by his parents. Apparently, this justifies that he gets to be the unquestioned asshole leader of a small community of survivors of an apocalyptic epidemic. Feeding these offensively male-centric and ridiculously unrealistic standards are stupid concepts like women instantly being wise to his leadership, his ability to train dogs overnight, and that other men in the story bow to his unfounded prowess. Todd is a terrible main character as he never seems to be wrong or experience any true growth/conflict. Also, the timeline is ridiculous. I don't understand any of the positive reviews...at all. This is a book for angry men born with tiny genitals who own big guns. Move on folks.

But Paul served his time and has now returned to Haven - the town where he grew up, and the scene of his alleged crimes.
