Where does Names Can Never Hurt Me rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

As I indicated in the title, it's the first audio-book I would ever classify as being perfect.I have only also heard Wade Kelly's, "Crap My Roommate's a Jock," and I enjoyed it, but not in the way I enjoyed this story. I won't lie--I found Jack Amber's voice so appealing--and sexy. I will forever think of him as Nick, which is only a great thing. All of his voices were completely distinct. I fell for both R.C., Nick, Paul, and Cory as the story evolved. Of course, this was due to Ms. Kelly's writing. So many times I stopped and repeated a phrase aloud from the story. They were so beautiful and honest.

What other book might you compare Names Can Never Hurt Me to and why?

This is difficult--I don't think I can. I just finished a string of wonderful m/m murder mysteries, but there were so intense with serial killers and all. I latched onto this story because of Nick, initially. I can't ever remember a protagonist who was not the sharpest tool in the shed, and a character who admitted it. That's what makes him so appealing; his gaffes were so adorable as he would never intentionally hurt anyone.

Have you listened to any of Jack Amber’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but as soon as I finish this review, I am looking to see what else he's narrated. I noticed early on there's not much m/m from him. I hope Mr. Amber realizes that he is a gifted narrator, and he needs to contribute more of his talent to this genre. I could truly listen to him read from driver's ed manual!

Who was the most memorable character of Names Can Never Hurt Me and why?

Cory surprised me. He matured much more than most of Nick's friends, and I was glad to see this happen. He was fun, but eventually showed that he had a hard life as well.

Any additional comments?

Again....and the judges' scores...10....10...10...10 and 10!!! A prefect score!!!!

What did you love best about PINS?

Have you ever discovered something that is so wonderful and then wondered why you had never encountered that thing before? Both Jim Provenzano (author) and Paul Fleschner (narrator) are now such new discoveries for me. I can only thank Audible for this ideal double-discovery. As I listened --always while dog-walking in August--I am sure that my jaw was slack as I heard the marvelous turning of phrases by the author. Mr. Provenzano has himself wrestled for 14 years, and it shows in his details. He obviously lived the life of a high school wrestler. But his writing...so expressive! Often, I would press pause to savor a sentence or thought. (My dogs grew bored with this as we all stopped to either think, feel, or sniff.) Also, Paul Fleschner's reading is spot-on. It is hard to believe that he is the same person who is capturing all the high school boys, their coaches, parents, and family members--both boys and girls. Every word is spoken with intentional purpose.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Favorite character? I want to say the story's protagonist, Joseph, is my favorite. Being a gay adolescent is so tough--I know all too well--but hearing Joeseph make the same discoveries I had made brought back emotions to me I long tucked away since I was his age.

Which character – as performed by Paul Fleschner – was your favorite?

I think it must be Joseph's dad, Dino. To me, he is the voice of reason which grounds all of the other characters. Mr. Fleschner makes the most of his resonant voice to capture Dino's love for his son.

If you could rename PINS, what would you call it?

I cannot improve upon PINS. It is meaningful to this story on so many levels.

Any additional comments?

As I write this review, I have about 90 minutes left of the story. This, in dog-walks, is about two. I am already mourning the loss of Joseph and Dink in my life, so I am ready to move onto other books by Mr. Provenzano. My request to Jim is this: PLEASE, "I would get my on knees, but that might be overkill" (taken and paraphrased from the book), PLEASE ask Paul Fleschner to read more for you.

Thanks, guys!
