Historia
The Etymologicon is a completely unauthorized guide to the strange underpinnings of the English language. It explains: How you get from “gruntled” to “disgruntled”; why you are absolutely right to believe that your meager salary barely covers “money for salt”; how the biggest chain of coffee shops in the world (hint: Seattle) connects to whaling in Nantucket; and what precisely the Rolling Stones have to do with gardening.

Historia
The salacious and scandalous murders of a series of couples on Texarkana's "lovers' lanes" created a media maelstrom and cast a pall of fear over an entire region. What is even more surprising is that the case has remained cold for decades. Combining archival research and investigative journalism, Pulitzer Prize-nominated historian James Presley reveals evidence that provides crucial keys to unlocking this decades-old puzzle.

Mispronounced Ouachita, the name of a nearby college. Wrongly accented pronunciation of Texarkana. Proved my mother lied to me about k owing one of the victims! I believe he correctly identified the killer.

Could be much better
Revisado: 04-26-17
I find the presentation to be very poor. I prefer to be spoken to, rather than laboriously read to. The reading was slow, pedantic, and boring, not to mention poorly edited. Everyone makes mistakes while speaking or reading, but surely the mistakes could be edited out, especially as the narrator went right back to his script. I found myself wondering who the presentation was written for, as surely university level students do not have to have the Cold War explained to them. I was hoping for more information on who the various tribes were/are, rather than having them presented as monolithic and with all beliefs and cultures mashed together as if there were no differences among them. More anthropology and less blaming would be welcome.

Historia
To truly understand the United States of America, you must explore its literary tradition. Now, in this grand collection of 84 fascinating lectures, you'll get the chance to finally become familiar with America's true literary masterpieces (some you may already be familiar with, others you have yet to discover). Professor Weinstein has crafted these lectures to explain why some works become classics while others do not, why some "immortal" works fade from our attention completely, and even why some contemporary works now being ignored or snubbed by critics may be considered immortal one day.

A bit depressing
Revisado: 04-23-17
I reject the notion that all "great" literature must talk about depressing, sad stories. That all families merely wound us, that life is only about scars. I would fix this problem with these courses by removing some of the multiple lectures about various texts and suggest adding at least a couple, both by women. Where is Louisa May Alcott? Just because her books were written for women and girls doesn't make them not great literature. And if we must have Faulkner, we need the leavening and uplift of To Kill a Mockingbird, which is a more likely candidate for Great Southern Novel. Finally, I was hoping for some of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Perhaps not Eliot's most serious work, but still well written and fun. I realize these lectures are nearly 20 years old, but it's time to update them. The instructor is well spoken and reads well and is very insightful. I've graded this down for causing me to wonder why I ever read for enjoyment!

Great mystery and suspense writers have created some of the most unforgettable stories in all of literature. Even those who don't consider themselves fans of this intriguing genre are familiar with names such as Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade, Hannibal Lecter, and Robert Langdon, and understand the deep and lasting impact this writing has had on literature as a whole.

Very interesting and entertaining!
Revisado: 11-27-16
Quite knowledgeable about the subject. I would like to introduce him to the pronunciation of the letter "g" at the end of the suffix "ing". To an American ear, it occasionally becomes confusing, as much as I generally appreciate a British accent. I was pleased to discover that I often anticipated the next topic of discussion from a general description. Two things I would have liked to be included: an unraveling of the plot of The Big Sleep, if one can be found, and something about the very popular books of J.D. Robb, which are a blend of police procedural, romance, and science fiction.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Love the humor
Revisado: 08-24-16
Yes, I know it's not a funny topic, but the Professor's sense of humor helps lighten it a bit. I also appreciate the fact that she said that people of this time were not stupid. We may have more information than they did, but they were perfectly capable of putting two and two together and usually getting close to four. Highly recommended.

Serious errors of fact
Revisado: 03-29-16
Robert E. Lee did own slaves and property in Virginia. Arlington plantation, in fact. Christopher Columbus did not discover a new world. There were people here before him, including some Europeans. Also, if I choose a history title, I do not want to be preached to about any religion. Not recommended.

Does God exist? Do we have a soul? Is it possible to make contact with a spiritual realm? How should we respond to the divine? Will life continue beyond death? Most people, whether deeply religious or outright doubters of any spiritual power, have probably pondered these questions for themselves. In fact, the religious impulse is so powerfully pervasive that neuroscience has posed a provocative question: Are our brains wired to worship?

A WARNING...

Not what I expected
Revisado: 03-15-16
I was hoping for a discussion of why some people are drawn to a religion when others are not. What I got was a discussion of why everyone is religious, which is not true. Aldo, the author is clearly biased towards Christianity, specifically Catholism. I'd hope a scientist could at least pretend to be objective. Also, he is boring repetitive towards the middle, which is as far as I could make it. Not recommended unless you already agree with his biases.

Science starts to get interesting when things don't make sense. Science's best-kept secret is that there are experimental results and reliable data that the most brilliant scientists can neither explain nor dismiss. If history is any precedent, we should look to today's inexplicable results to forecast the future of science. Michael Brooks heads to the scientific frontier to meet 13 modern-day anomalies and discover tomorrow's breakthroughs.

One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?
