Historia
During the 1600s—between the end of the Renaissance and the start of the Enlightenment—Europe lived through an era known as The Age of Reason. By exploring all the key events and bringing to life some of the most influential characters of the era—including Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Newton, Descartes, Spinoza, Louis XIV, and Charles I—acclaimed historian Paul Strathern tells the vivid story of this paradoxical age, while also exploring the painful cost of creating the progress and modernity upon which the Western world was built.

Packed with new reporting, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party tracks Trump’s improbable journey from disgraced and defeated former president to the dominant force, yet again, in the Republican Party. From his exile in Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump has become more extreme, vengeful, and divorced from reality than he was on January 6, 2021. His meddling damaged the GOP’s electoral prospects and his legal troubles were mounting. Yet he re-emerged as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and the president-elect.

Remarkable coverage of a pathetic man and a morally compromised and spineless party.
Revisado: 11-30-23
Such a pathetic man and bootlicking party. What an image this country presents to the world with the following Trump commands. So bad that portions of this book were outlandishly funny in the absurdity it portrayed of Trump and his following. What a sorry and contemptible lot.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

A GREAT GENERAL AND PRINCIPLED DEFENDER OF RIGHTS OF AFRICAN AMERICANS—A GREAT MAN, INDEED.!!,
Revisado: 04-11-23
THE READING WAS WONDERFUL. THE READER GAVE GRANT, RAWLINS, SHERMAN, AND OTHERS DISTINCT VOICES. HE MADE GRANT COME ALIVE. I HAD NO IDEA THAT SHERMAN HDA A CHANGING AND COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP WITH GRANT. I FOUND IT SADDENING AND DISTRESSING TO SEE HOW OTHERS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF HIS GOOD NATURE AND TRUST DURING HIS ADMINISTRATION AND PARTICULARLY THE LAST YEARS OF HIS LIFE. HE ENDED HIS LIFE,, IN DEEP PHYSICAL PAIN, COMPLETING A WORK OF LITERARY MERIT, SO THAT HIS WIFE WOULD HAVE FINANCIAL SECURITY. WHAT A HERO AND MAGNANIMOUS GENERAL IN HIS TREATMENT OF LEE AND THE CONFEDERATE ARMY!!!,

Historia
In 1541, the brutal conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro and his well-born lieutenant Francisco Orellana set off from Quito in search of La Canela, South America's rumored Land of Cinnamon, and the fabled El Dorado, "the golden man". Driving an enormous retinue of mercenaries, enslaved natives, horses, hunting dogs, and other animals across the Andes, they watched their proud expedition begin to disintegrate even before they descended into the nightmarish jungle, following the course of a powerful river.

A remarkable story of leadership and courage.
Revisado: 03-11-23
Until I came upon this audio book, I had never heard of Francisco Orillana nor of his legacy. The obstacles these conquistadores had to overcome were enormous as they coursed down the system of rivers known now known as the Amazon—-heat, hunger, disease, tides, hidden and submerged trees and shoals, and belligerent natives. The book also supplies a helpful background showing Orillana’s close relationship and dependence upon Francisco Pizarro and the latter’ s family. Orillana was part of Pizarro’s contingent which conquered the Inca Empire. It also supplies background information surrounding the relationship between King Charles I of Spain and his conquistadores. Orillana’s account of what he learned among the natives as he traveled the river created an impetus for others to follow, sometimes with disastrous results. A great audio book—-highly recommended. Has the makings of several good movies or tv series a la Indiana Jones.

WHAT AN ADVENTURE!
Revisado: 02-20-23
Millard supplies the reader with a detailed picture of the jungle and river—-the hidden dangers found in the waters and the green growth. She supplies us with the backgrounds of the leading players of this expedition \, including the strengths each exhibited during this arduous and dangerous journey. The discipline which kept this group together was only possible because of the leadership qualities supplied by the commander of this expedition—a Brazilian colonel who ed the military contingent of this expedition. The reading was splendidly rendered. A great treat indeed!

Historia
Jonathan Swift is best remembered today as the author of Gulliver’s Travels, the satiric fantasy that quickly became a classic and has remained in print for nearly three centuries. Yet Swift also wrote many other influential works, was a major political and religious figure in his time, and became a national hero, beloved for his fierce protest against English exploitation of his native Ireland. What is really known today about the enigmatic man behind these accomplishments? Can the facts of his life be separated from the fictions?

Brian Cox’s rendition a pleasure to listen to
Revisado: 11-07-22
This was an edited version of Aubrey’s lives. For a complete version, check out the Penguin English Library.
Aubrey touches upon the interesting eccentricities of famous philosophers, politicians, courtiers, scientists, theologians, and aristocrats who lived in the times of Elizabeth, James I, Charles I, Cromwell, and Charles II.
It’s like reading Vanity Fair or People Magazine concerning famous personalities. The English language is a delight to listen to, the listener can hear Brian Cox chuckling in the background, showing his fondness for some of those characters. Also helpful, was the music which introduced some of this characters. I found Sir Walter Raleigh’s and Thomas Hobbes’ lives fascinating and quite entertaining. You’re taken back to that time and place.

Historia
Brought up in the household of a powerful Baron, Candide is an open-minded young man whose tutor, Pangloss, has instilled in him the belief that 'all is for the best'. But when his love for the baron's rosy-cheeked daughter is discovered, Candide is cast out to make his own way in the world. And so he and his various companions begin a breathless tour of Europe, South America and Asia, as an outrageous series of disasters befall them - earthquakes, syphilis, a brush with the Inquisition, murder - sorely testing the young hero's optimism.

Revisado: 06-16-22
The narrator’s several voices as Candide, Cacambo, Martin, Cunegonde ,etc. were masterful. His was a brilliant display of Voltaire’s withering wit and observant eye of our failings as a species. Recommend listening and then reading this masterpiece!!!

Historia
In this glittering biography, Elizabeth Lev reexamines Caterina Sforza's extraordinary life and accomplishments. Raised in the court of Milan and wed at age ten to the pope’s corrupt nephew, Caterina was ensnared in Italy’s political intrigues early in life. After turbulent years in Rome’s papal court, she moved to the Romagnol province of Forlì. Following her husband’s assassination, she ruled Italy’s crossroads with iron will, martial strength, political savvy—and an icon’s fashion sense. In finally losing her lands to the Borgia family, she put up a resistance that inspired all of Europe.

Explodes Genghis Khan’s Image as a Brutal and Bloodthirsty Conqueror
Revisado: 02-25-22
I was shocked about my mistaken impression of this extraordinary man and his two grandsons Mongke Khan and his brother Kublai Kahn. Enlightened rulers ahead of their time. The rise to power by Timugen (Genghis Khan) from such unlikely origins was enthralling. His campaigns to consolidate the warring tribes in Mongolia, simply enthralling. I highly
recommend it. I thought that the author’s afterword was too long and in some respects repetitive to what was written in the last chapter. I suppose he had to do so to explain the labor devoted to writing the book.
