This is probably the worst book in the series, the way big issues were handled here was unrealistic and shallow.

Love J.A.Huss writing. Normally, she is good to her heroines and her ladies kick ass but here it’s all gone wrong. HH are friends and lovers who have se..x together a lot and treat heroine like piece of meat and she is totally ok with it. As a smutty story it’s great but as romance it’s awful, I couldn’t stomach it….

I knew what to expect when I stated this story, what I object to is the method of delivery; the writing was very juvenile and amateurish, how author managed to make a kidnap trope boring and predictable is beyond me. I have read lots of new adult romances but this one made me feel unclean.

I recently kissed so many frogs that I exceeded my limit of returns so unfortunately I am stuck with this silly book.
I downloaded it without reading any reviews and mistakenly presumed that title Persuasion implies besotted hero persuading reluctant heroine. Unfortunately it turned out to be completely opposite; Amelia is a besotted fool, who keeps insinuating herself into hero’s life under pretence of worrying about his children and ends up being his housekeeper.....????? Her total luck of pride, her holiness and self sacrificing personality was hard to take. I wish she made him grovel instead of continually chasing after him.
I can tolerate a measure of ridiculousness and suspend disbelief in some cases when story is really engaging and minor silliness can be brushed aside (Bertrice Small or Jennifer Blake ...) but this book just left me annoyed and irritated.

Be prepared for unconventional heroine

The low ratings of this book is probably all due to unconventional heroine, who is very hard to warm up to; she is uneducated, rough spoken daughter of the dirt farmer, she is a shrew, constantly swearing, shrieking and has not tender feelings for anyone but her Pa. it was hard to see her as the romantic heroine at the beginning of the book but as the story progressed Cassandra grows up and starts to make slow steps to changing into a resemblance of a lady.
On the positive, I found her character totally authentic to the time period and to her upbringing, she was strong, resilient and very self reliant.
Overall, I really enjoyed this western romance, it’s well written and I didn’t want to stop listening until the end.
I will definitely listen to more books by Deborah Camp 🌟

Love, war, divided loyalties

What a fantastic listen! I absolutely loved it and didn’t want it to end. It reminded me a little of Gone with the Wind. It is set in the same time period and touches on the same issues: South and North, slavery, family, betrayals, divided loyalties, and of course, love...

Book is very well written and has a cast of interesting multi developed characters. Laura, the heroine of the story, is probably one of my favourite heroines. She is beautiful but also educated, principled and has strong convictions. There is no insta love/lust between H/h, romance developed slowly and there is no explicit love scenes (descriptions of feelings rather than mechanics).

I liked the narration, Anna Field did a wonderful job.

Highly recommend if you are interested in HISTORICAL romance set during the Civil War period.

Old fashioned bodice ripper, love it or hate it

This book was first published in 1977, so you have to be prepared for many elements that are not suitable for modern sensibilities; violence, rape, big age gap between h/H, ward and guardian to lovers and eventually to husband and wife relationships.

Heroine is 16 and endures a lot of heartbreak and violence thoughout the book. She is not most likeable character, a bit silly and flighty: I rolled my eyes many many times and had to remind myself that she is acting according to her age. Of course, she is the most beautiful woman and every man she meets falls madly in love with her. There is a love triangle and both man act violent against her at some point because of their great unrestrained passion ...
But despite all the craziness I greatly enjoyed the story and it will definitely be in my keepers shelf.
The book is well written and slowly pulled me in and made me care for these characters and what will happen to them.
I enjoyed the historical aspect of it as I didn’t read many books set in that time period ( French Revolution and Rein of Terror), the storyline was original and moved fast, there was never a dull moment.

There is no accounting for taste but mine is obviously out of sync, I don’t understand how this book got so many positive reviews. In short; flat, borderline immature writing, silly dialogues and the rest of it is plain boring.
Linda Howard is one of my favourite contemporary romance writers but this just doesn’t feel like one of her books.
Narrator was ok, but not good enough to elevate the story.

Hot cheesy mess from the 80s, didn’t age well at all. Maybe if Shelley wasn’t such a wet blanket it could have been a better story....
Definitely will try to return it as I will never listen to this melodrama again.
