After listening to the first couple of chapters of this book and realizing that it is a zombie book, I considered putting it away because I very rarely find a zombie plot that holds my interest (my exception up until now was The Girl with all the Gifts). I'm glad I gave Anywhere But Here a chance though.

I'll start with the one thing that I had difficulty with (and many other people had difficulty with according to other reviews) - the POV. I had trouble at first distinguishing between Remi's POV and Waverly's. I actually thought, at one point, that maybe the characters were the same person but maybe during a different time frame (hence going by a different name). I also had trouble with the past vs present although not as much. I started getting the hang of it after a while but it did take some effort.

Both Remi and Waverly's characters were engaging as were their individual storylines. I connected a little more to Remi personally but I found myself invested in the fates of both characters. I'm also intrigued by their special abilities - especially Waverly's visions. It will be interesting to see where their stories go.

I can say that the ending was not what I had expected, HOWEVER, I really feel like I should have seen it coming. Can't wait to read/listen to the next installment of their stories.

I really enjoyed this book - the main character, Carol, was very well developed and interesting. I enjoyed her casual sarcasm and thought that the author did a great job of making her likeable even though she is a very flawed character. The story flowed well and I didn't feel like it was rushed or sluggish at any point.

The story is about Carol's search for the cause of her daughter's death. Carol is a homeless alcoholic which is an unusual situation for a "sleuth" but worked well for her. Through an interesting turn of events, Carol begins to unravel the thread of what really happened to her daughter.

It was unique to see things play out through the perspective of Carol's character - I don't think the book would have been nearly as good from a different perspective. The confusion she experiences is apparent in the way the story progresses at times and allows the reader to better understand the situation through her.

The narrator for the audio version had the perfect voice for this character. I felt that it was believable and I could envision Carol based on the vocals.

Overall, Matchbook was worth the listen.

This book was entertaining to say the least. I really enjoyed the parts of the book containing Max's visions - the history and backstory were very good. The native American culture parts were also very interesting. The Salem-esque feel of the town and the setting of Halloween helped add intrigue to the story.

Note: for the first few minutes and for brief periods a couple of times in the narration, I could hear an awkward style to the narrator's vocal patterns. I almost didn't listen past the first little bit because it distracted me. It got better as it went on and I didn't notice it after a while.

Also, I did feel like some of the sections revolving around the other teens that Max goes to school with seemed a little odd and unnecessary to the story. I have no issues with homosexuality but for this 11-year-old boy in a small town being exposed to sex acts in a locker room and constantly staring and describing bulges and naked body parts was a bit over the top. Yes - I'm sure it does happen, however not that often and it wasn't important to the plot.

Any additional comments?

I liked this book as a casual read but felt like the plot was a bit forced. I can't imagine that someone who had just escaped from a mentally, physically, emotionally, and sexually abusive captor would so easily open up a man. I would have liked to know how much of the story was based in fact and how much was fiction. I listened to this as an audiobook and felt like the the story moved at a good pace and the narrator did a very good job. I would have liked more of the book to be about Portia's healing - it seems like the psychological piece would be very interesting if the author could get insight from an actual victim.

All of that aside, I did experience the book from start to finish and thought that as a piece of fiction it was done well enough. I usually don't read books this short as I enjoy character development which there was only so much room for in a book this size. I probably won't read it again but I enjoyed it for what it was.

Any additional comments?

I'll start out by saying this isn't my "usual" type of novel. I enjoy character development which you don't tend to get in stories of this length - that was not the case with Breaking Measures though. I particularly like mysteries where you just cannot predict the ending ahead of time and, in that regard, I was not disappointed. I never would have guessed the killer ahead of time - they weren't even on my list of mental suspects! I felt that Leila's character was well developed and the story kept a nice pace. I'm left wanting to know more about several characters and relationships - especially Leila and Orion but also some of the other minor characters as well. Even though the plot was closed up well and doesn't feel unfinished, I still find myself wanting more and can't wait for A Woven Silence.I listened to the audio version of this book and feel that the narration by Rebecca Roberts was great - she did accents for some of the characters and the tones that she used really brought characters to life and it was easy to differentiate who was speaking at all times.***I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Blast.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wouldn't change anything about the book - its a classic tale!

What didn’t you like about Curtis Sisco’s performance?

Sisco was speaking way too fast. I even attempted to slow it down by going .75 speed but then I got an echo so I ended up listening to him rush through a great story. I also thought he didn't bring enough emotion to the character of Ichabod. Overall, he could have done more to enhance the story but instead I feel he deminished it.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes - I found the story to be interesting and the concept was a unique spin on the distopian world genre.

How could the performance have been better?

I think a different narrator would have really helped with this. I enjoyed the story but the narrator had a distracting voice and she gave a lot of the characters very nasally voices which was very distracting.
