Historia
It's shaping up to be a quiet Friday night at the US Coast Guard's remote rescue station in Sitka, Alaska. With a violent storm due to sweep across the region at any moment, chances are no one would be crazy enough to be out in that kind of weather. But then a mayday call comes in. An unknown vessel is in distress, somewhere in the frigid waters of the Gulf of Alaska. Within an hour, windspeeds out there are hitting 150mph while waves are cresting at well over 100ft. What ensues has been described as the most harrowing and tragic search and rescue mission ever attempted in the state. A ...

This book is better read, than listened to.
Revisado: 10-01-23
The story and plot line were pretty good. I was really surprised by the ending. I think the prologue was unnecessary, and would be better included in a full novel (which I would love to read)!
The narration, however, was terrible. It honestly sounded like an automated voice recording. I regret that I didn't read the reviews first. I first heard the first chapter read as a preview while listening to another audio book. That narrator did such an excellent job that I listened to it three separate times. I was disappointed that he didn't do the full book. I ended up purchasing the book and reading it. The book was so much better that way.
I purchased this audio book for $4.99 and this is an honest review.

It’s been said our lives are no more than a string of decisions. Thousands of choices made every single day. Most seemingly inconsequential. While others harness the potential to lead us to dark and unforgiving places. Do our choices control our destiny? Or are we all like the gambler who repeatedly rolls the dice, hoping each time for a smile from Lady Luck?

You are golden. Don't give up!
Revisado: 06-18-23
A fascinating account of the true survival story about an 11 year old boy who survives a plane crash, keeps a cool head, and perseveres in finding his way to help. If you find survival stories as awe inspiring as I do, you'll like this one. As a matter of fact, you'll like this entire series: Deadly Disasters by Wondrey.

Historia
In late September 2015, Hurricane Joaquin swept past the Bahamas and swallowed a pair of cargo vessels in its destructive path: El Faro, a 790-foot American behemoth with a crew of 33, and the Minouche, a 230-foot freighter with a dozen sailors aboard. From the parallel stories of these ships and their final journeys, Tristram Korten weaves a remarkable tale of two veteran sea captains from very different worlds, the harrowing ordeals of their desperate crews, and the Coast Guard’s extraordinary battle against a storm that defied prediction.

A Little Dry
Revisado: 11-21-22
This is basically a comprehensive record of the incidents involving the two ships, those actions of those aboard, the actions of the Coast Gaurd to rescue them, and any other information directly with this incident. It's investigative information interspersed with comments from interviews; followed by the details of the aftermath, lawsuits, and regulatory changes. It's a great book for what it is, but don't expect the high excitement and adrenaline of novels like "The Perfect Storm" or podcasts such as Wondery's- ''Against The Odds'.
The narrator is articulate and perfunctory. He starts out a little dry and robotic, but eventually picks up the nuances of character changes and emotions. I would like to listen to another book narrated by him, to get a more rounded opinion. Not as likely to look for another book by this author though.

Historia
When the fishing vessel La Conte sinks suddenly at night in 100-mile-per-hour winds and record 90-foot seas during a savage storm in January 1998, her five crewmen are left to drift without a life raft in the freezing Alaskan waters and survive as best they can. One hundred fifty miles away, in Sitka, Alaska, an H-60 Jayhawk helicopter lifts off from America's most remote Coast Guard base in the hopes of tracking down an anonymous Mayday signal. A fisherman's worst nightmare has become a Coast Guard crew's desperate mission.

A Slow Start
Revisado: 11-19-22
This book begins with many seemingly irrelevant details, that are working to establish a context and setting for the story. I don't think all of it was necessary to this particular story, but were interesting to the author and so were included. Hang in there though, and when he gets into the second part, you'll be riveted to your seat and headphones, unable to multitask or go to sleep; it's just that good. This is one that I'll likely listen to again and again to pick up each detail I may have missed, and feel the emotions of each distinct character as they play out and are remembered.

Historia
Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, carrying 239 passengers, disappeared into the night, never to be seen or heard from again. The incident was inexplicable. In a world defined by advanced technology and interconnectedness, how could an entire aircraft become untraceable? Had the flight been subject to a perfect hijack? And if the plane did crash, where was the wreckage? Drawing together countless eyewitness testimonies, press releases, independent investigative reports and expert opinion, de Changy offers an eloquent and deeply unnerving narrative of what happened to the missing aircraft.

Worse Than An Instruction Manuel
Revisado: 11-07-22
The content of this book lacked anything that perpetuated any interest or intrigue. The story of this missing flight, and the conjecture around it, is and should be fascinating enough without enhancing. However, the author manages to dry it out and strangle it with a discombobulated list of factual details amidst a great deal of insignificant information, with footnotes every other sentence. It also quickly lost any cohesive flow. It was like listening to someone read an instruction manuel in which all the pages had been mixed up. Such a waste of time and money. Not recommended.

A Fun Listen!
Revisado: 07-18-22
This book was a fun throw back to the mobster days and speech of the thirties. It incorporated both past and present; blended well in a light mystery, with well developed 'Andy Griffith' characters, set in a small contemporary (if nostalgic) book store in a little town. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was a nice change of pace from James Patterson and the heavy drama I'd been reading.

Revisado: 03-25-22
Fast paced and intriguing, you'll be listening hour by hour, waiting to see who is behind the insidious plot. This book definitely has some surprises along the way. The characters are well developed, making you feel connected. When the book is over, you'll want more of them. I'm looking forward to the next book in the serious.
The narrator has a lovely reading voice, but her male character voices are much too forced. Not bad overall though.
