Historia
Racial Innocence will challenge what you thought about racism and bias and demonstrate that it’s possible for a historically marginalized group to experience discrimination and also be discriminatory. Racism is deeply complex, and law professor and comparative race relations expert Tanya Katerí Hernández exposes “the Latino racial innocence cloak” that often veils Latino complicity in racism. As Latinos are the second-largest ethnic group in the US, this revelation is critical to dismantling systemic racism.

Grateful for this book
Revisado: 06-05-23
I am so thankful that this book was written (and the narrator did a wonderful job by the way). This is something I've experienced so many times in my life, but didn't have the full cultural understanding. Grateful for the author sharing her story as well as the research of these legal cases.

Historia
He wasn’t known to mainstream audiences, even though he worked with renowned acts like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu and influenced the music of superstars like Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. He died at the age of 32, and in his lifetime he never had a pop hit. Yet since his death, J Dilla has become a demigod: revered by jazz musicians and rap icons from Robert Glasper to Kendrick Lamar; memorialized in symphonies and taught at universities.

Historia
Tommy J. Curry’s provocative audiobook The Man-Not is a justification for Black male studies. He posits that we should conceptualize the Black male as a victim oppressed by his sex. The Man-Not, therefore, is a corrective of sorts, offering a concept of Black males that could challenge the existing accounts of Black men and boys desiring the power of white men who oppress them that has been proliferated throughout academic research across disciplines.

Words for the Emotions I've Experienced.
Revisado: 02-15-22
I can't thank the author enough for this book. Often, people use the phrase 'I feel seen'. Now, I can truly say this myself, possibly for the first time in my life. The way the lives of Black men with a linage of American chattel slavery are discounted, disregarded and discarded has been a weight on me. Thankful that someone is posing the question why it has to be that way, pricking my own conscience for accepting it as unquestionable truth for so long.

Historia
All I Could Bare is the story of a mild-mannered graduate student who "took the road less clothed". Seymour embarked on his journey in the 1990s, when Washington, D.C.'s gay club scene was notoriously no-holds-barred, all the while trying to keep his newfound vocation a secret from his parents and maintain a relationship with his boyfriend, Seth. Along the way he met some unforgettable characters....

Historia
Rene Thompson has been waiting all year for Negro Achievement Day. It falls on the second Monday in October. This is the one day that Negros get to go to the state fair. Mama has been telling her that when she is 10 years old, she will be old enough to go; this is the age when you can answer questions if you happen to get lost. Rene is worried that the nosy neighbors and the good church folks are doing everything possible to convince her father that it is too dangerous for Negros to travel to Dallas.

Great story.
Revisado: 11-10-21
Full of humor and heartbreak, I Want To Go recalls the account one young black girl's experience with the State Fair of Texas and Dallas in 1965. What the audio recording may have lacked in refinements, the story itself compensated for me. A recommended listen.

Historia
Jazz could not contain Fred Hersch. Hersch's prodigious talent as a sideman - a pianist who played with the giants of the 20th century in the autumn of their careers, including Art Farmer and Joe Henderson - blossomed further in the '80s and beyond into a compositional genius that defied the boundaries of bop, sweeping in elements of pop, classical, and folk to create a wholly new music.

Wonderful
Revisado: 05-13-21
Mr. Cohen did a fine job with Mr. Hersch's story. Both the addition of music from Leaves of Grass (why don't memoir productions from musicians do this?) and actually hearing from Fred Hersch himself were very memorable moments. I would also add that I really enjoyed the chapter that describe the physicality of piano playing.

Historia
Henry Dumas' fiction is a masterful synthesis of myth and religion, culture and nature, mask and identity. From the Deep South to the simmering streets of Harlem, his characters embark on surreal and mythic quests armed only with wit, words, and wisdom. Championed by Toni Morrison, Walter Mosley, and Quincy Troupe, Dumas' books have long been out of print. All of his short fiction is collected here, for the first time, and includes several previously unpublished stories.
