Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Strong themes but read more like a thinking person’s superhero than a real character.
Revisado: 11-29-23
Strong themes but hampered by emphasis on plot over character development. Agreed with many of the themes and enjoyed the story overall but too pat for my liking.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.

Interesting, realistic and depressing
Revisado: 01-02-23
This is a beautifully written story about a dystopian world not that different from our own. Similar to Margaret Atwood, Celeste Ng draws on real events in history and refashions them into a quietly terrifying world. Her turns of phrase are imaginative and beautiful but ultimately the story’s sadness got to me.

A difficult start but left me thinking about it for days
Revisado: 11-05-22
I found the narrative device of hearing one-side of the protagonist’s conversation trying at first but I came to realize it was helpful in juxtaposing two cultures. As an immigrant I appreciated how the author relayed how our origins and perspectives influence our understanding of a place. After a certain point I became immersed in the story and it has stayed with me for days.
