Historia
David Richo draws from history, Jungian psychology, Buddhism, nature, and other spiritual traditions to illuminate our connection to the “helpers” we can call upon to navigate life. Some of the assisting forces in our lives are visible, and some are invisible. Some are with us for life; some come and go. Spiritual assisting forces could be bodhisattvas and saints—or partners in a relationship who are allies to one another. In this fascinating inquiry, Richo posits that the archetype of the ally is necessary if we want to connect with the richness of our lives.

A few gems but highly cerebral
Revisado: 10-23-24
I found several helpful gems in this book, but found the content to be more theoretical than I was hoping. I would have liked a higher percentage of practical application guidance. And, for me, the narrator had a rather monotonous and strangely paced voice which detracted from the content.

Excellent Guide to IFS for Self-Guided Work
Revisado: 10-10-24
I’ve read several books on IFS, and wondered if I would learn anything new from this title—and I was delighted to come away with many new insights and tools to use in my self-practice. This is a very thoughtful and helpful guide to the practical application of IFS.

Honest insights and helpful guidance in navigating spiritual awakening
Revisado: 03-27-24
I appreciate Jonathan Robinson’s open and honest approach to a topic that is newly emerging as a valuable therapeutic tool. The questions he suggests we ask ourselves are helpful multiple situations, not just psychedelic therapy, and I’ve bookmarked several sections in the book to revisit during my journaling and meditation practice.

A heartfelt renewal of my faith in humanity
Revisado: 03-24-24
This book surprised me by building from a gentle start to diving deep into the core essence of what it means to be a human—all the good, the bad and the confusing instincts that drive our behavior. I laughed and cried and wished that it would never end.

Great new ideas for getting unstuck
Revisado: 06-19-23
I’ve done a lot of reading about setting and achieving goals, overcoming resistance, and forming good habits, so I wasn’t expecting to learn much that was new. What a happy surprise! Britt has done extensive research, has relevant personal and professional experience and has assembled them into helpful, actionable steps. It’s a great read if you or your clients/friends/work teams are ever feeling stuck.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Historia
"Having empathy means our heart goes out to another person in joy or pain," says Dr. Judith Orloff. "But for empaths, it goes much further. We actually feel others' emotions, energy, and physical symptoms in our own bodies, without the usual defenses that most people have." The Empath's Survival Guide is an invaluable resource for empaths who want to develop coping skills in a high-stimulus world while embracing their gifts of intuition, compassion, creativity, and spiritual connection.

Historia
The crisis of unfulfilled lives unfolds gradually, often with acquiesced boredom and a flimsy search for purpose. Our relevancy comes into question, or we succumb to the idea that the future will be one of slow-moving ambition and then an even slower glide into comfort as the flush of freedom fades. We can change this outcome if we want to. We should want to. The 60-Something Crisis: How to Live an Extraordinary Life in Retirement is the first book to circumvent the tired approaches of finding purpose, or using reinvention to discover a path of fulfillment after sixty.

I should have guessed from the title.
Revisado: 12-29-22
This book does a great job of pointing out all the negative and depressing statistics about post-60’s life, along with egocentric stories and solutions that worked for the author but were not helpful for me.
I kept listening hoping it would get better, but ultimately found it uninspiring and mostly a waste of listening time. It definitely focuses on a crisis perspective.
I rarely give negative reviews, but I found very little positive to focus on here.

This book is packed with solid research on the impact of alternative approaches to healing. The positive upbeat approach and excellent narrator made it a joy to listen to, and I know I’ll return to it again and again whenever I need to get re-inspired to maintain my own alternative healing practices.
