Historia
I don’t agree with many of the words you’ve used, but I will give you this: They do have a way of looking at you sideways that can be unsettling. So begins a letter from Nathaniel, a PhD candidate who’s recently moved from the east coast to Orinda, California. Nathaniel knows that his brother, Brice, who still lives near their mother in Michigan, couldn’t possibly understand the nuances of his and Cate’s new life: their eclectic community, their work in academia, and the liberal, alternative thinking that shapes the way they’ve handled their fertility issues.

Historia
It is the day of her brother’s wedding, and our narrator is still struggling with her wedding toast. Despite a recent fracture between them, Danny has asked her to give a speech, and she doesn’t know where to begin, how to put words to their kind of love. She was nine years old when she traveled with her parents to Thailand to meet her brother, age three. They grew up together like any other siblings, and shared a bucolic childhood in Northern California. Yet when she holds their story up to the light, it refracts in ways she doesn’t expect.

A short listen that’s worth the credit
Revisado: 08-04-21
I downloaded Immediate Family expecting to listen to a little bit everyday, but as soon as I started it, I couldn’t stop. It begins with the narrator’s being asked by her brother to give a speech at his wedding, then unfolds into an examination of the narrator’s relationship with her brother, who was adopted at a young age. At the same time, the narrator is struggling to get pregnant. Her uncertainty about that intertwines with her complex family history to deliver a heart-rendering, surprisingly funny and poignant novel. I finished in two sittings and will be going back to listen again soon.

Historia
In the summer of 1937, Amelia Earhart is the most famous woman in the world - a record-breaking pilot, a best-selling author, and a modern woman shattering the glass ceiling in the early days of aviation. And then she vanishes. In Tampa, Florida, 15-year-old Lizzie Friedlander spends her afternoons glued to her father’s radio, tapping into the enormity of a world she longs to travel. Lizzie can hardly believe her ears when she picks up a radio signal from a faraway source that sets her heart racing: “Amelia Earhart calling SOS!”

Extraordinary women
Revisado: 01-30-20
I was surprised, delighted and in the end moved to tears by this historical fiction story about Amelia Earhart and the young girl who tried to save her. At 2 hours it feels like it could be a movie. I say historical fiction although it is based on true events, when Earhart’s plane famously vanished. The story follows Earhart’s last hours in flight as she calls for help, and the life of the teenage girl who accidentally picks up her final transmissions. It’s a story about courage, loss and memory. Without giving too much away one of the story’s best moments is in the last chapter, when we find out what has become of the main characters.
Earhart is one of those American heroes I have known about my whole life, but this story gives so much incredible insight into who she was as a person and more importantly as a woman. There is a lot here I didn’t know and I have to say that I am so intrigued! Listening to this has made me want to listen to a biography of Amelia Earhart.
This story also uses some very nice sound design. I don’t like when audiobooks have too much going on in them, so this uses sound effects very subtly and nicely. Much appreciated!

Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

Love triangle
Revisado: 12-06-19
It starts off kinda slow as you get to know the main characters, but turns into a gripping love story. It’s the kind of novel where you know it can’t end well but you’re still hoping for Annie March to make the right decision. Great depictions of war. Really fell in love with the characters by the end, as tragic as they are.

Historia
In January 2019, culture writer Anne Helen Petersen set the internet on fire with her viral BuzzFeed essay diagnosing “millennial burnout” - a chronic state of stress and exhaustion that’s become a “base temperature” for young people today. Now, she continues this generation-defining conversation in a brand-new format, interviewing millennials around the country about their own deeply personal experiences with burnout, and the culture that creates it.

Millennials
Revisado: 10-04-19
This podcast takes a look at a few millennials around the country and tries to explain why they are the way they are. It’s more of a podcast than an audiobook but I actually liked that because you get to hear their voices. The reverend was great. This was free through the members benefit.

Short but sweet and very funny. Screwball brightened my morning on the way to work. I even sat in the car in the parking lot so I could finish it as it’s under 1 hour long. Listen to Screwball for Beck Bennett’s narration - I love him
on SNL. I got a little chocked up in the end! I hate when reviewers say this but...I just wished it was longer.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

powerful
Revisado: 06-07-19
this was such a powerful, beautiful and moving tribute to the greatest generation. it tells a story that frankly doesn't get told often enough, about the toll that their sacrifices took on their lives -- as told by the ones closest to them. it's also about the author's quest to make things right by bringing back the body of his father's lost comrade. most important, it's about fathers and sons and finding that closure that most of us never find. as someone who has veterans in the family, you hear stories like these a lot, but rarely do they get told like this. I'm glad I listened to this as it has reminded me all over again of what it means to be american. i won't soon forget. now someone hand me a tissue!

Very interesting true crime memoir
Revisado: 04-11-19
Very interesting book from start to finish. What makes it different is that it’s part memoir and part true crime. The author, who is a great narrator too, talks through his early years writing about crime and how he decided after the death of his friend to actually start solving crimes. His friend wrote the book “I’ll be Gone in the Dark,” so if you liked that you will probably like this too as they have a lot in common. Favorite part was hearing him describe the day the golden state killer was caught. Great ending too for anyone who is interested in solving crimes themselves where the author gives his tips and rules. As a murderino I liked Karen’s introduction as well!!!!!
