what happened to Don Winslow?
Revisado: 05-27-23
I never leave reviews. This time I do.
I just finished the book. It is really bad. So bad I can't believe Don Winslow has written any part of it.
Winslow is one of my favorite writers, I recommended him to all my friends. I loved basically every book he wrote.
The first one in this series was below his par, anyway still OK. But City of Dreams is astonishingly poor.
Nothing happes. Half of the book is padded with inconsequential fillers, an hour is wasted describing a mushroom-induced dream. And Danny dates an actress, how interesting. There's no buildup to an ending, which in fact lasts the whole of thirty seconds and then the book is over. By the way the end doesn't even make any sense.
What a waste of time. Shame on Winslow. Really.

who wrote this????
Revisado: 11-13-22
Who wrote this?
It is so bad even S.Brick sounds ashamed.
Probably some old short story material lost in a drawer and grossly padded up by some ghost writer.
Bad story, bad everything.

unbearable to listen
Revisado: 06-14-17
What disappointed you about A Man for All Markets?
The author is also the reader. He has so many speech impedments that it is almost funny. But impossible to listen to. Half the time he can't pronounce "s", "r", "t".
Actually, at the beginning he talks about this pronunciation problems as a kid. Well, they didn't go away.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
couldn't go past the first hour: too painful to listen to
What didn’t you like about Edward O. Thorp’s performance?
You can't even call it a performance. It is a tragedy.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I am very interested in the book, but I guess I'll have to read it myself.
Any additional comments?
Shame on Audible for publishing such a poor "performance"

“Why is this town called Mother’s Rest?” That’s all Reacher wants to know. But no one will tell him. It’s a tiny place hidden in a thousand square miles of wheat fields, with a railroad stop, and sullen and watchful people, and a worried woman named Michelle Chang, who mistakes him for someone else: her missing partner in a private investigation she thinks must have started small and then turned lethal.

Historia
One of the iconic investigators of contemporary fiction, Arkady Renko - cynical, analytical, and quietly subversive - has survived the cultural journey from the Soviet Union to the New Russia, only to find the nation as obsessed with secrecy and brutality as was the old Communist dictatorship. In Tatiana, Martin Cruz Smith’s most ambitious novel since Gorky Park, the melancholy hero finds himself on the trail of a mystery as complex and dangerous as modern Russia herself.

WORST NARRATION EVER
Revisado: 07-20-15
What did you like best about Tatiana? What did you like least?
Not Renko's best, still good story. NARRATOR awful. So bad I will have to go to printed edition just to get to the end. I listened to hundreds of audiobooks. This is the worst production ever. Does anybody listen before publishing an audiobook??
Would you be willing to try another book from Martin Cruz Smith? Why or why not?
Read / listened to almost all of his books. Love him, love Renko. Thank god I didn't listen to Tatiana as his first book...
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Don't know where to start.... No defining voices for key players. Impossible to distinguish who is who during dialogues. Sleepy tone all across the board. Wrong pronunciation of most of non-english names, words. A total production flop.Maybe the actor is getting old or had some issues, on previous Renko's books he was almost OK although never near good, but this is a new low.
Was Tatiana worth the listening time?
NO, due to narrator.

Historia
P.J. O'Rourke traces his development from hippie protester to conservative grouch to jaded humorist. Along the way, we are privy to his strange, twisted days as editor in chief of National Lampoon, as well as the in-depth looks at appropriate sports for middle-aged Republicans, namely those which can be engaged in with a smuggled Havana between the teeth - fly-fishing, bird hunting, deep-sea fishing, and of course, golf. Plus, you'll hear O'Rourke's take on the Virtues of Automobiles - because what good was oil doing sitting in the ground for millions of years? - and many other hilarious rants in this off-the-wall collection by America's premier political humorist.

usual great PJ, but PATHETIC sound quality
Revisado: 08-06-09
As a PJ admirer, I read this collection of old articles plus witty funny author's notes, years ago. The audiobook version is just PATHETIC, I am asking for a refund: the audio quality is so bad is it unbearable, impossible to listen. It is obviously a cassette tape remastered, and a bad job at it, anyway. First time I got screwed by Audible, after hundred of great books.
