As a nonsmoker I’ve always been surprised and suspicious about the sudden explosion of vaping and loved learning about the events and people who played a role in this.

Overall worth a listen- it’s a topic (like most mental health issues) that desperately needs more clinical research, better patient management, and a fundamental overhaul of how it is understood as a society. This offers a great overview of the history of ADHD and the major events that got us to where we are today. My biggest qualm lies in what I see as a failure to fully grasp the narrative and therefore it feels like they were overly influenced by those they interviewed… and didn’t seem able to challenge or develop new/unique insights about the epidemic. They admit that their primary source of interviews with people with ADHD was simply people within their own personal social circles. This inherently limited the pool of voices and I struggled to understand what solid insights many of them were supposed to provide. Also, one of the interviewees was Leon’s sister- who essentially self diagnosed herself to excuse her behavior at work…. Which ultimately Leon avoids really digging into, despite being a HUGELY damaging behavior that is worsening the overall situation for people actually living with legitimate, diagnosed, and clinically managed ADHD.

This is an example of a book where the authors have very little helpful information to share, so they stuff the book full of repetitive stories/examples that don’t add any value. Almost feels like it was written for a child.

This series was eye opening and at times, difficult to listen to due to the sheer pain and injustice it describes. But they do the crisis justice, with excellent storytelling, in depth research, and thoughtful takeaways from this dark moment in American history.

This book so excellently ties together the complex history of slavery, racism, inequality, and American Christianity… and how the latter has played a formative role in maintaining a White power structure for generations.

I was diagnosed with ADHD 15 years ago and have been a daily adderall user since, but I always was bothered by the notion that this pill was supposed to be the cure and that was it. I never had a doctor who could really speak to my varied experiences, but this book was mind blowing in how accurate it could describe these challenges and also gave a deeper understanding into how they develop. Eternally grateful to Dr Maté

The book is based on ultimately helpful guidance, but I couldn’t get over the 1995-esqe style.. the majority of it is the author narrating and explaining fictional characters, in a way that almost feels corny.

It’s 2023, the science has advanced and there are simply better books now.

Decent anecdotal examples of good management techniques, but overall pretty dated and there are definitely better options available. Lots has changed since the 90s and this book makes that obvious.

Narration is cheesy and makes this hard to listen to.
