Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Heroic and Breathtaking
Revisado: 01-12-25
Every moment of this story held me captive. It is a story of perseverance and leadership at its finest, as the seamen on this interrupted journey faced freezing temperatures, hunger, injury, disease, and isolation. They had no choice but to put aside their human frailties and carry on knowing all the while that they were their only hope.

Search and Rescue in The Whites
Revisado: 12-18-24
The author has a thorough knowledge of the volunteer and professional search and rescue “tribe” in the White Mountains of NH, its value, and its purpose. I enjoyed this glimpse into the lives of SAR and the people they help.

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

The attention to detail and fully fleshed out characters of this author’s AT journey made me feel as if I were hiking alongside. One of my very favorite AT memoirs! I have listened to the audiobook several times, without any loss of interest.

Historia
On a mountain somewhere above treeline, in some of the coldest and worst winter conditions imaginable, two men lie unconscious in the snow as explosive winds batter the nearby summits. In The Last Traverse: Tragedy and Resilience in the Winter Whites, Ty Gagne masterfully lays out the events that led up to an epic and legendary rescue attempt in severe and dangerous winter conditions in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. More than a cautionary tale, it is a tribute to all the volunteers and professionals who willingly put themselves in harm's way to save lives.

Historia
It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

When Injuries Don’t Heal
Revisado: 06-13-23
In 2017 I fell six feet vertically, through an unsupported trap door onto solid ground. My right leg needed 50 stitches, but healed completely. My left ankle, while “only sprained” hurts every day due to a damaged nerve and my left leg is weaker than the other in several ways. My biggest fear at the time was that I would never hike again. While not as severe as the author’s injuries, my injury and the process of healing it has motivated me to plan a thru hike of the AT in 2024 at the age of 63. Imagine my surprise when I came across this gem! The book is validating, full of humor and grit, and convinces me that while some injuries can’t heal completely, the soul can. It also makes my dream seem possible. If you have ever experienced a loss that seems unacceptable, this book will hit home. Well written and inspiring.
