My sister told me this book is really good, and she was NOT wrong! I had finished another romantasy book right before this one that I gave five stars to, but this story blows that one out of the water.

LOVED THIS STORY 😍
Revisado: 06-24-24
I thought the premise of this book looked cute, but I didn’t realize I’d be obsessed with the happy sunshine feelings that accompany it, by finishing it in a day! I stayed up past 2am on a work night, crying sad and happy tears as I laid in bed listening. I couldn’t even fall asleep, I had to know what happened next. There were times I thought I knew what would come next, and 80% of the time I’m glad the obvious thing didn’t happen. If something guessable did happen, it was actually a joy and I was happy for it.
I loved the characters. I want to go to Ireland now. And I also want to reread this book 2-3 more times before I start reading anything else haha.
This is the first book I’ve read of McKinley’s, and now I want to read more of her work if they’re all this entrancing! Run, don’t walk to get this book.

Historia
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Great storyline! Had me gripped
Revisado: 01-31-24
Loved the story. I finished this within two days. My only hesitation is that even though the narrators were great, it was distracting when the female narrator did Kai’s voice- it sounded more like a pre-teen’s voice and not a man in his twenties. Obviously it’s hard to portray the opposite sex, but I listen to a lot of female narrators and I usually don’t get sidetracked like that. She did great for Paedyn’s character. I also loved the male narrator who did Kai’s parts- so good!

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

This book really helped me look at my own behaviors and identify others as emotionally unavailable. I’ll continue to listen to this book over the years to get better at healing certain aspects I struggle with. How am I just learning about this subject in my mid 30’s?!

Once upon a moon, the wild wind whispered in my ear that the true queens were returning to Solaria, and I made it my mission to open up their path to the throne so that they could slip right in like an oily oyster. Now, on this most special and wonderous of days, the very day of their birth–I will prove myself to be the most loyal and dependable of their followers. Though of course, Venus is in my chart, and Lady Petunia has caught sight of the bothersome barracuda once more.

Geraldine is the BEST

Meh
Revisado: 10-06-23
This was ok. My favorite parts were the bread crumbs of Darius and Tory. Reading this made me realize I’m glad there isn’t more Geraldine and Max in the book because their storyline is too fluffy for me. I’m not sure if the narrator overplays Geraldine, but either way, Gerry is supposed to be over the top as a side character, but reading a book almost entirely from her point of view is a little painful at times. I prefer her as just the sprinkles on top haha. I did like hearing more of Max’s POV, but it still makes no sense how he’s fallen for Geraldine with how crazy she is and never understanding her sayings for everything.

Historia
Fate has torn us apart, and, sometimes, I believe the stars have given up on us altogether. Without my sister, the world seems darker than ever before, and the shadows loom thicker, rising up to answer the call of the Shadow Princess, and changing the face of Solaria for good. I’m afraid we’re almost out of time. Hope is a dangerous thing. It’s the key to us fighting on. But it could be what destroys us in the end. One thing is for certain, I won’t stop until I have been reunited with my other half, and together we will fight to take our crowns. A war is coming.

I'm obsessed & emotionally exhausted
Revisado: 09-11-23
I've been listening to these books every free minute I can over the last three weeks! They’re amazing, but I'm exhausted from the constant emotional roller coasters. If one good thing happens, then that equals a bad thing happening right after you finally thought you could exhale with relief. That being said, I do find myself laughing out loud from some of the characters and the situations. I really love Gabriel; one of the scenes in particular felt doomed but became incredibly light hearted from his wit and dependability- I will forever remember this scene! I also find myself loving Seth’s voice narrated- he’s like a dog turned human with so much energy and stream of consciousness. I used to hate him but now I love seeing the world through his eyes.
The character development is slowly coming along and it’s great to see them all working together against Lionel *yes*!
One misgiving that I can’t quite get over is the inconsistency of power. Specifically when Darcy can burn away the shadows in others and how overly powerful Clara is when she controls the shadows in them. It also seems like the Phoenix powers can trump anything when they need to, but then they have major deficits when the plot needs to progress . All those things feel a little inconsistent and either the power imbalances aren’t explained enough, or the rules of their world haven’t been set up enough by the authors in order to make sense all the time.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Hard topics, yet it gets better & better
Revisado: 07-18-23
I was hooked the whole time listening to this book, however, for the first third I was rating it around three stars in my head. I couldn’t figure out how so many people gave it five stars with such violent, graphic events happening without any warning. So even though it took time to see where it was going, the journey was worth it.
I also had read a review beforehand that said it was a “man-hater book,” which I was ready to disbelieve from the beginning. I can see why one might say that, but they’re naive to think that such obvious sexism wasn’t a part of everyday life in the 50’s-60’s and STILL exists today. Can we just be honest and say that sexism exists and not pretend that women have the same opportunities and expectations that men do? The person who said that it’s a “man-hater book” is also forgetting that there were still great men in Elizabeth’s life that respected and supported her. It’s not about hating on men, it’s about breaking societal norms and also realizing that even other women would tear Elizabeth down too because she took a different road than them. It’s about what everyday people do with authority to those in lesser positions when no one is looking. It wasn’t just about women, these things happened to men in the book too. What makes the ending so amazing is that we see what good people do with power! (Spoiler: They choose to look outside themselves and give a voice to those who don’t normally have one. They empower others 💛)
Although characters are supposed to have flaws, I sometimes felt that Elizabeth’s character seemed a little too oblivious to others, almost like she couldn’t pick up on social cues. Then there were moments were it felt like she was less human and more of a radical stereotype figure we wanted to cheer on in the 60’s from our time now. I still really liked her wit, calm demeanor, and the progression of the story, but sometimes it felt like she was trying too hard when there was an easier way she could’ve achieved the same thing…but maybe that’s the point about struggling with an uphill battle?
I can’t forget mentioning 6:30’s character. I’ve never been so charmed by the thoughts of a dog before! I loved his character development and how he played a role in so many ways. Yes!

Interesting
Revisado: 12-07-21
The philosophy behind the book is intriguing. My friends told me about this book and I had to read it. Whoever the narrator is, isn’t a trained voice actor and it sounds like a normal dad who just picked up a book and is reading to his kids at night…so that bugged me because the acting could’ve been a lot better. I also thought the book was going to end differently, however, I know I won’t stop thinking of this story and I’m glad there was an audio version so I could listen while cleaning my house.
