Great story
Revisado: 05-28-24
I had to start over a couple times as the characters were introduced in the midst of action. I figured the characters would all come together at some point, like the old disaster movies (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, etc.) of the 1970s.
The imagery and storyline were coherent, except for the Cole and Lena facing off against the 4th member of the cannibals.
There was a gap in that portion of the story. I backed up several times trying to determine how they were positioned. It wasn’t there. The rest of the story blended nicely.
The descriptions of the aliens, conditions of the work camps, hunters and trackers was very well done. I am hooked and looking forward to listening to the next book.

This was an engaging story. Seemed plausible, which is about all you can ask for in a discriminatory novel. The first of the series was a bit too much.
Narrator was amazing.
Didn’t realize I’d skipped from book one to book five with this listen. Gonna have to go back to book two and see the progression.

Enjoying the dialogue
Revisado: 08-29-23
I like the technology, ship and alien descriptions in this story. The main character seems to be suffering from what Overlord DVD might call, “The bestest ever!” Syndrome. Very good at everything all at once. This is slightly tempered by small errors and injuries.
Overall, an interesting story progressing at a reasonable pace.
Entertaining!

Revisado: 05-17-23
The Other Place reminded me of the ‘70s disaster movies, Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Aventure, etc., in which you meet all the main characters individually and they all end up together during the crisis.
Alien sci-fi is one of my top choices for listening. I also enjoyed the psychic and intuition aspects of this story, as well as the lack of explanation along with the description of the action. It kept me guessing and that is what kept me listening, foregoing my daily podcasts and livestreams.
I am also a fan of RC Bray. I first heard him and liked his narration in the Galaxy’s End(?) series. But thought he would be over-challenged to voice women and especially a little girl. But, between the dialog written and the character creation, he nailed it! Despite the thin-sketch descriptions and the appropriate dialogue, each of those characters were very much alive and real in my imagination.
I’ve picked up “The Hidden Place” and am about to start that.

Historia
Cole Riker is a Slip Runner. A contractor tasked with finding alien salvage in exchange for credits. For an ex-smuggler like Cole, there’s a catch: Don’t break the terms of parole. That means doing things by the book. Find salvage, turn it in, get paid. But everything changes when a retrieval mission lands him in a previously unknown sector. There, he finds the material he’s been sent to recover, along with something more. A brand-new form of ancient alien life.

Predictable/unrealistic
Revisado: 01-25-23
The narration was great. The story was entertaining. I am a science fiction fan. Discovered Isaac Asimov in the College of the Sequoias community college library while avoiding the studies I should have been doing. One thing that stood out in all those early Sci-fi novels and short stories was the lack of emotional intrigue. Very heavy on science, logic and futuristic technologies but shy on people. ‘Slip Runner’ has a decent amount of characters, but they seem a bit stereotypical. Villains are easy to hate and the main character is the shady cat with scruples. So, overall a bit simplistic. The most obvious had to do with a tracking device. The main character is not blessed with extraordinary intelligence. He seems several steps behind all those he encounters.
It is unbelievable that most folks from whom the main character receives assistance decide to join him on the next mission.
I’m about to start the second in the series. Let’s see how this develops.

Excellent!
Revisado: 06-24-22
I had downloaded this title as I had all the others, working my way through the series after watching all the TV episodes. I didn’t realize until I heard him announce “Narrated by Titus Welliver” that the actor I’ve come to regard as Bosch was actually reading the book. I was thrilled! But at the same time, curious. Could he voice a woman? Voice different characters?
Well, not only is he Harry Bosch, but he does great accents and all kinds of women. It all sounded right. Well done Titus!
I liked this story for a number of reasons. First, Bosch seems truly appreciative of his partner. Which has not been the case in forever. Seems he has a problem with all of them.
These novels may be formulaic, but I don’t see it. Each seems unique. I prefer a lack of predictability.
Ultimately, this was a wonderful listen. I really enjoyed Welliver’s narration. It seemed very relaxed and natural. And just sounded right. About to start “The Crossing”. Really looking forward to it.

Excellent expansion of the YouTube video.
Revisado: 12-25-16
Ever watch a movie and think, "I want more!", then track down the book and find it full of rich details that bring additional depth and texture to the story?
Well, that is exactly what happens in "Alone Together". I watched Christian Williams' video twice, I loved it so. I may just listen to the book again as well. Wonder what type of auto-helm equipment he used? He not only tells you, he tells the surprising story of the actual purchase. The book is full of wonderful stories and the details never become tedious.
I did rate the performance down a bit. But only because I have heard the author narrate his videos so masterfully. For whatever reason, I found his narration a bit slow and stilted at times. As much as I enjoy the tones of Mr. Williams' voice, as happy as I was to find he narrated his own book, I was slightly disappointed by those two small deficiencies. Perhaps I'm over-sensitive, having suffered through too many Scott Brick narrations to tolerate a performance even slightly resembling the almost unlistenable experience I endured with the "Coyote" sci-fi series.
If you enjoy sailing, have ever considered cruising or single-handing or solo sailing to Hawaii, this book is for you. Mr Williams is a great story teller!

The history!
Revisado: 10-30-16
It is amazing, listening to this book as we near the 2016 election, to find so much of the Clinton scandalous history present in this book. Ann documents the very press caterwauling occurring today with such regularity after Trump's every public speech, but now used to smear Trump with precious Democrat acts, like Gore's rescinded concession and the Florida recounts. Which party has a history of not accepting election results?
Clinton lobbed bombs as Lewinsky details hit the press, inspiring the movie, "Wag the dog"
This book is worth the price for the history alone, but you get the bonus of Ann's dry sense of humor as well. Enjoy!

Excruciating
Revisado: 07-04-16
I almost quit this listen several times. There is little advanced technology described or utilized in this story. I kept waiting for a conflict to emerge or a wondrous event of some sort. Instead, the story plodded along, bogged down in the mundane details of everyday life of academic poverty. Sure, it is set in some alien future, with some space travel, but these are rarely experienced or described in the story. Ugh!
