Historia
Fresh off the success of her groundbreaking first play, A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry's The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window tells the tragicomic story of a young bohemian couple in New York's Greenwich Village, struggling to do what's right in a world that rewards everything that's wrong. Sidney is a dreamer who wants his own Walden Pond; Iris is a budding actress whose own backstory is a performance. They're caught in a moment where, "the world is about to crack right down the middle," as the play tackles racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia, liberal complacency, and more.

Not for everyone, but great art!
Revisado: 10-13-24
Yes, this is a challenging piece of art, but it does tackle some complicated and difficult ideas and it is a product of the times! in terms of great art and when considered in historical perspective, I enjoyed the ideas and performances!

Historia
Somewhere in shadowy post-war Vienna, where everyone has something to sell on the black market, lurks "the third man", who witnessed the murder of Harry Lime. The police don't care to investigate, but novelist Holly Martins is haunted by the death of his friend, and his search for the killer makes for electrifying drama.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-20-24
Overall this recording was flat! I usually depend on LATW to deliver a wonderful interpretation with top notch casts, but this has to be the least likable of the many I've heard. I even had the privilege to be present, with a group of students, when they recorded the beautifully haunting Oedipus Rex, which I use in the classroom!
Even the reliable actors John Mahoney and Kelsey Grammer are humourless and flat. As someone pointed out in a previous review, where's the humor and charm of the classic film? Not a fun listening experience... very disappointing!

interesting life
Revisado: 07-04-22
I was pleased in an unexpected way by the autobiography of Marvin Hamlish!
First of all, I've been a big fan of Robert Klein for years and he is a pleasure to listen to... coincidentally, I got to see Hamlish conduct songs from They're Playing Our Song with Robert Klein and Lucy Arnez singing, just a few months before Hamlish died! This entertaining Bio brings all the pieces together!

Historia
Form-defining short stories. First published in 1914, James Joyce defined what the short story could be with his collection The Dubliners. A mixture of prose and poetry, each story can be listened to independently, or as a collection. From childhood to maturity, we see what life - and ultimately death - can be, via an extraordinary cast of characters, all of whom experience an epiphany. There’s Father Flynn, the priest; Evelyn, the shop girl who dreams of escape; Mrs Mooney, the butcher’s daughter, who runs a boarding house.

Well done
Revisado: 06-24-22
I've listened to another version by multiple readers, but Chris O'Dowd is very pleasant on the ear and gets the language mostly right... The Dead, one of my favorites, is a bit too light... but always makes me want to watch the John Houston movie, which so fully captures all the flavors. Overall, well done!

good try
Revisado: 03-12-22
i appreciate that this was written during Covid and it attempts to deal with so many of the issues that have arisen in these strange times, but it ends up fragmented and unresolved, not in a good way. Interesting moments and some thought provoking ideas with good performances, so kudos for trying to create!

I was at a concert in Queens, New York, as a child and Bela walked past our picnic blanket to get to the stage and speak! But I have never fully realized her tremendous contributions to the rights of the oppressed until this fun and informative one person show! Thanks Harvey for another great show!
