It upset me that the author was SO CLOSE to a great opening book for his series.
His writing is very good as is his character development. Half the battle is creating characters that are believable and draw empathy... this he does in spades.
However the story itself while good, certainly better than average for the genre is forced at times... The explanation of what to expect from an EMP felt like: " OK were gonna pause the story and have a learning moment " all so matter a fact... the worst was when a character gave the effect radius of an EMP down to the mile... it was something like 1834 miles... Now who would say that in a conversation, this is just one of many examples.
I know I'm nit picking but it hurts when all in all the story was excellent only to be stunted by things like this.

I stopped this nonsense with 2 chapters left.... really
this is how people behave when society is collapsing...I was already turned off by the lack of though put into behaviors of people eary on.... but now its just nonsensical and ludicrous. You know that moment when you find yourself in conversation with a stranger only to realize they are a kook?
Well I just had that moment with this story.... good day sir.

same ole same ole...tired of the cliche situations....preppers are prepared for anything and everyone else acts childish and idiotic... good characters but bad situations.
