Outdated and pits women against each other.
Revisado: 12-03-24
This book isn't really that old but it hasn't aged well. All the female characters are catty and antagonistic with each other. When the main character grows a backbone and sets some boundaries with her pushy boyfriend, the best friend makes her feel guilty and back off? ew. And then the obsession with weight and diet is off-putting.

Revisado: 09-24-23
I made it to book three of this series before I could stand it no more. All the men are devilishly handsome and immediately enthralled by the main character. Most of the women are mean and petty. The love story is lackluster at best and the main character falls into his arms way too often. I wish they focused more on the mystery, book binding or even the commune, anything but the terrible love story. Not my style. The narrator's Scottish and British accents were super cringey, otherwise I thought she did alright.

Historia
Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

Poor performance
Revisado: 01-29-23
I love this book and series. I'd love to listen to it but the performance is so painful to me it ruins the whole experience. I have not been able to get through it. Lyra's voice is painfully screechy.

Historia
My dog once took a bullet that was intended for me. A bullet that ripped through his chest, narrowly missing his heart, and exited through his shoulder blade. This left him unconscious on the floor of my home. Amazingly, this bullet did not kill him. Ten years ago, I adopted Blue after I broke up with my boyfriend one hot, early summer night with the windows open and the neighborhood listening. The next morning I went straight to the pound in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Articles on buying your first dog tell you never to buy a dog on impulse.

She gets beat up a lot
Revisado: 01-28-23
She gets beat up and drinks a lot which isn't my thing. It's a mystery novel trope that I just can't get behind. How many times can you get bashed in the head before you have permanent brain injuries?
This is a dumb detail to get stuck on but it really bothered me that she took her brand new, untested dog out near a school playground where he attempted to attack a man for just existing. Then later that night, she takes him to her brother's house and just hopes that he will get along with their cat.
I did enjoy the secret tunnels though.

Bogged down in the details
Revisado: 01-13-22
I just want to parrot what others have said. There were many moments in the book that were overly detailed and didn't progress the plot in any way. It was a struggle to get through. I'll listen to the next but if it's similar I'll probably stop investing in the series.
I didn't have an issue with the performance.

Historia
Gretch Wolgast is a bit of a dud. Just ask her. She’s a 21-year-old college dropout who has a loser job at the mall. Sure, she can lift a tennis ball with her telekinetic powers. But only three feet in the air. And she has to be sitting. Gretch is an OP, one of thousands born in Orlando, Florida, in the early 1980s who mysteriously developed the ability to move things with their minds. Unfortunately, she turned out to be the weakest of the bunch. Now, Gretch’s life is being turned upside down. She witnesses a murder and discovers a wide-ranging conspiracy.

Nice build up, weak resolution
Revisado: 03-01-21
I liked the characters and the narration. I enjoyed the antagonist's self deprecating nature, but I found the climax was weak. The author painted the main character into a corner she couldn't get out of in any other way than the easy way. I probably won't read anymore in this series but I look forward to the next Andrea Vernon novel.

Distracted by the narration
Revisado: 12-07-17
I liked the Iron Druid Chronicles and I have enjoyed other things Luke Daniels has read but this one is a bit of a miss for me. The accent he used for the narrator was obnoxious and distracting. I would lose entire paragraphs to trying to figure out who exactly was talking. Then suddenly the voice would change to Xe Sands. For all her negative reviews here I found following her much easier.
I will probably at some point read this book the old fashioned way but for now I am giving up on this after only a couple of hours in.

Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Disappointed by the narrator
Revisado: 08-02-17
I have read this before and loved it. The narrator's performance leaves a lot to be desired. His inflections are strange and often his main characters (especially Hermione) whine inappropriately. He does have a good range of character voices which makes it easier to follow dialog.

Google, and then Google and little more Google
Revisado: 02-16-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narration was fine. Nothing really to complain about. The story was clearly where it lacked.
What was most disappointing about Robin Sloan’s story?
Google. I like Google, I use it every day. They've made some great products, it's true. I just felt like I was watching (listening) to "The Internship" all over again. It got to where I was rolling my eyes every time the word 'Google' was mentioned, and since I listen in the car and I was rolling them so often, I began to fear for my safety.
Any additional comments?
I called the so-called 'mystery' pretty early on in the book and the relationships were pretty weak, so there wasn't much to compel me to continue listening. Sorry, Robin. Not my cup of tea.

Slow... Exciting... Slow... Exciting...
Revisado: 06-21-12
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The story itself was pretty entertaining... but with all of the 80s, video game and nerd references it got a little overwhelming. Problem wasn't so much the references, but the fact that each HAD to be explained. There was no getting around it, otherwise you'd be lost. So the author ended up spending more time explaining than progressing the plot. It was exciting in parts, but extremely slow in others.
Was Ready Player One worth the listening time?
I think I'd have preferred to read it. Not that Wil Wheaton did a poor job or anything. He did a great job, but with all of the explaining that had to be done. it got a little dry. I'd probably have skipped over certain parts of it while reading.
