A Signature Performance: Kenneth Branagh plays this like a campfire ghost story, told by a haunted, slightly insane Marlow.

Mediocre plot, but masterful narration!
Revisado: 03-23-17
Kenneth Branagh delivered a fantastic performance in his narration of this book. While I wasn't impressed by the plot, Mr. Branagh kept my attention to the end. It was as I saw described in an overview of this audio book, just like listening to someone tell a ghost story around a campfire. (Although this is certainly not a ghost story.)
The story itself seemed mostly an ahead-of-its-time social commentary, flying in the face of the racial biases of the day of Joseph Conrad.

Another fine adventure!
Revisado: 02-19-17
Cold Energy is definitely an excellent sequel to Dead Energy! It does a great job continuing some of the plot elements from the first book, while having a well-defined storyline of its own. Each of the main characters are again very likeable, while villainous characters keep you guessing as to what they're up to next. As with book 1, Cold Energy reminds me of the action-adventure style of the early works of Michael Crichton, with details that hint at deeper technical and geological understanding. But, happily, the reader is never bogged down by those details as her/she enjoys the narrative.

Riveting plot, friendly narration
Revisado: 02-13-17
I received this book as a gift, after having first read the fourth book of the series. Reading them out of order didn't give me too many spoilers for my enjoyment of this initial installment.
As with the fourth book, Mr. Corkill's storytelling skills in Book One remind me again of the early works of Michael Crichton. The plot has layers that come together nicely to the climax toward the end, leaving me eager to get into Book Two. The sci-fi technology that is central to the plot is beautifully described and explained, while not bogging down the flow of the narrative. Overall, the story runs along as a techno-thriller, with the bit of mystery to tie up by the end. The main protagonist Alex is introduced with a deep and believable past which drives much of his present as a relatable modern man.
In the Audible narration, I really enjoyed Paul McSorley's voice-acting skills, and the country feel he delivered, which fit the rugged nature of much of this story. He brought the characters to life in a most enjoyable way.

Slowly the metal colossus, casting its enormous shadow upon the surrounding trees and buildings, began to stride towards the Brigadier. A giant metal hand reached down to grasp him.

Just hearing Tom Baker's voice narrate the story made it come alive. And, what a pleasant surprise to hear the musical interludes and sound effects dabbled tastefully throughout! Well done! Thank you for the experience!
