incredible contemporary real time account
Revisado: 11-07-24
Fabulous first person account of contemporary developments during the onslaught of Nazi expansion and European domination. Shirer was there, bumping shoulders with Nazi leaders and reporting events as they happened, under the threat of allied bombs and Gestapo oppression. An extraordinary and raw account of atrocious events that the west initially tolerated.

Historia
In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.

Fascinating and comprehensive
Revisado: 06-28-24
Massive detail, amazing research and consistently clear arguments detailing the hypocrisy and incredulity of organized religion. I'd love to hear what Hitchens has to say about the cult of personality, which pervades modern politics, not just in North Korea, which is a particularly overt example that he does consider, but also in the west.

wild ride through clandestine histories
Revisado: 10-27-22
Very interesting story of one of the most prolific inventors of modern espionage. Vast lessons to be gleaned from understanding the nature of secrecy, surveillance, and the constant conflict such indispensible intelligence work causes in its effort to protect our democratic ideals from autocratic evil while inherently confounding democracy's fundamental covenants.

amazing history of a terrible period
Revisado: 09-16-22
fabulous and riveting, the author intimately describes the many moments and events that could have spiraled circumstances into worldwide annihilation. I couldn't help.but think it's amazing we're still here soany times during this book. Fascinating and honest depiction of all the players, with all their flaws, and a debunking of the myths surrounding these terrible days.
More politicians need to read such history.

Scary, remarkable and riveting
Revisado: 07-15-22
Having been myself to Russia seven times, the first being 1991, and a Soviet/Russia history maven, Browder's story resonates on so many levels. It amazes me western diplomats and leaders give the Putin regime so much credibility, when there's vast evidence he is but a psychopathic despot who does whatever he wants under the guise of denial. We all need to take note and find the way to eliminate autocratic trash who dominate and repress decency innate in their people.

The Talmud says: “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” This instinct to take every measure, even the most aggressive, to defend the Jewish people is hardwired into Israel’s DNA. From the very beginning of its statehood in 1948, protecting the nation from harm has been the responsibility of its intelligence community and armed services, and there is one weapon in their vast arsenal that they have relied upon to thwart the most serious threats: Targeted assassinations have been used countless times, on enemies large and small....

Wild story about the history of Mossad
Revisado: 07-01-22
Hard to put down and exceedingly depressing account of a conflict that will never end given each side's fundamental commitments against one another. I had no idea how aggressive and overt the Israeli- Islam conflict has been, violent, depraved, and with no side able to gain an upper hand. It's so surprising that putatively smart people can't understand that reprisal violence will never be a solution and only fuels the fire of hatred into successive generations.

Just wow, amazing tome of revelations
Revisado: 06-22-22
As a Russian/soviet history buff, this was an impressive addition to my reading list and engages further context of where we are now with Putin's Russia.
The last few chapters were particularly riveting; especially catholicism and Pope John Paul II's roles as a significant supporter of solidarity which catalyzed the decline of soviet eastern european domination, quite an interesting and plausible addition that I had not considered or read about previously.
Communism, in all forms, is truly ethically bankrupt.

Conjecture, fantasy & sensationalism the rule
Revisado: 03-14-22
This is an intriguing story, but the authors are clearly bent on spinning a yarn vs. recording history. All the evidence posited to support his hypothesis that K-129 was a rogue attempting to start WW3 could just as easily support a hypothesis that the crew was attempting to defect, and somehow failed due to sabotage, which seems vastly more likely.
I found the first half quite interesting and the second half barely listenable because author conclusions are so biased and incredible.
The facts are no one really knows what happened and thevworld may never know. The authors are convinced otherwise but base that conclusion on even self contradicting evidence and vaporously thin arguments.
I was overall disappointed.

Historia
On May 1, 1960, an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union just weeks before a peace summit between the two nations. The CIA concocted a cover story for President Eisenhower to deliver, assuring him that no one could have survived a fall from that altitude. But against all odds, pilot Francis Gary Powers emerged from the wreckage and was seized by the KGB. Award-winning journalist Monte Reel reveals how the U-2 spy program, principally devised by four men working in secret, upended the Cold War and carved a new mission for the CIA.
