Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Historia
Based on the rare and until now overlooked journal of a Renaissance-era executioner, the noted historian Joel F. Harrington's The Faithful Executioner takes us deep inside the alien world and thinking of Meister Frantz Schmidt of Nuremberg, who, during 45 years as a professional executioner, personally put to death 394 individuals and tortured, flogged, or disfigured many hundreds more. But the picture that emerges of Schmidt from his personal papers is not that of a monster. Could a man who routinely practiced such cruelty also be insightful?

Best Historical Book I’ve Ever Read
Revisado: 01-05-24
I have a degree in history so that says quite a bit. Very well narrated - I felt like I was listening to a fictional recounting at times, which is as big a compliment I can give to both the author and the voice actor. Very good at relating 16th century mindsets to modern readers.

Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Pierce might have just written the best book of the series
Revisado: 09-12-23
Absolutely fantastic story, an immense improvement over the last two installments. Kept me on the edge and needing to listen more and more, till I was shocked by the words, “The End.”
TGR does a great presentation, as always, though I did get used to Lysander having a more haughty voice; Lysander sounded a tiny bit too much like young Darrow. I also find it more enjoyable to listen to TGR at 0.9x speed.

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

I’ve read and listened to the RR series in its entirety many, many times. This gives a whole new perspective and is just a pleasant journey through an already amazing story. More of these renditions is not a simple want, my Goodman, but a NEEED

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed
Revisado: 06-13-22
I tried; I tried to get into this book but just can’t. It feels like the “the Last Jedi” of the Quasing/Tao universe.
I could forgive the slightly juvenile writing style for the great story and character elements from books 1-3.5. This book, however, failed to grab me at all.
3.5 sets up a great continuation to a world event I was excited to see play out—if not with the original characters, then at least the same time frame. Instead, we open 10 years after book 3.5. It feels like a washed up version of book 1, with more forced character identities.
I’m going to have to leave this book as unfinished in my library; if I could get a credit back, I would.
Wes, wake me up if-and-when you ever retcon this stuff and continue the Tao series from where us fans wanted it to continue from.

Another slap in the face of Star Wars fans
Revisado: 02-21-22
Oof, Claudia, you might want to stop writing Star Wars stories. Basic plot premise: “What if the Jedi can’t do the one cool, unique characteristic that everyone loves about them and then made the worst possible decisions?”
I was beginning to like the High Republic, but like every Star Wars trilogy, there’s always that one story we don’t talk about. The Bruno of this adult trilogy is The Fallen Star. At this point, I believe Kathleen Kennedy and the execs at Disney get masochistic joy from serving us up this feces on silver platters. The sad thing is, we all down it happily like greedy little pigs and demand more.
Pacing and writing feel like a juvenile novel. The phrase “in other words” is used ad nauseum to over explain any major plot points. In other words, Claudia thinks we’re too stupid to get what she’s writing.
Marc Thompson redeems it with a great performance, and the SFX make it much better than it deserves.

Revisado: 10-26-21
Bray knocks it out of the park again. The ending was so annoying, disappointing, and infuriating that it knocked me off my axis for the next day and a half. I guess that lends itself to the great universe creation by Alanson, but I want to slap his sack for ending it that way.
