What I love about this book is the message surrounding family and what it means to understand the people you are genetically linked to.

Historia
Mattie can't remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. She must never make him upset. But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they’re not alone after all. There’s something in the woods that wasn’t there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws. When three strangers appear on the mountaintop looking for the creature in the woods, Mattie knows their presence will anger William. Terrible things happen when William is angry.

A little uneventful for my liking
Revisado: 08-22-23
The blurb makes this seem like a tightly-paced, frenetic thriller. However, I often found my mind wandering during the multitude of conversations about “what to do next.” Rather than take action? The characters mostly talk about what they’re going to do. I wanted to like it so much, but it was a little too much of a slow burn for me.

Historia
Alfa Ndiaye is a Senegalese man who, never before having left his village, finds himself fighting as a so-called “Chocolat” soldier with the French army during World War I. When his friend Mademba Diop, in the same regiment, is seriously injured in battle, Diop begs Alfa to kill him and spare him the pain of a long and agonizing death in No Man’s Land. Unable to commit this mercy killing, madness creeps into Alfa’s mind as he comes to see this refusal as a cruel moment of cowardice.

I, too, came of age in the video store and remember Faces and Traces of Death. They had an irreversible effect of me, and I carry the horror of those images to this day. This novel is a reminder of what a specific kind of experience can do to a person.

Historia
Charles L. Grant's town of Oxrun Station became real to horror fans (much like Lovecraft's Arkham and King's Castle Rock). While most of Grant's stories were contemporary, he did write a trilogy of "historical" novels placed in an earlier Oxrun. The Dark Cry of the Moon is a classic werewolf tale for fans of the old Universal and Hammer horror films. The emphasis is on character and atmosphere, not on gore. It is the second volume in Grant's acclaimed "historical horror" trilogy.

A darkly comic satire of the horror community
Revisado: 12-04-22
Duncan Ralston's Gross Out lives up to its name—certainly. But don't let the cover fool you—the book is also a darkly comic satire of fame, celebrity, cancel culture, Hollywood, the horror community, and anything that gets in the author's way.
Fans of early Carl Hiaasen will recognize the way Ralston approaches characterization. If you have an iron stomach and a predilection toward the more extreme side of horror, you'll absolutely love this novel.
