Tracing the epic 5,000-year story of warfare from the earliest battles to the War on Terror, The Military History Book explores and explains the causes and consequences of each, offering a new angle on military history. Entries analyze the key social and political driving forces, the arms and armaments, and the technologies and tactics of war over the last 7,000 years—from the tactics of early infantry and siege craft to the rise of naval combat steel, steam, and shellfire, and from trench warfare and aerial dogfights to chemical weapons and cyber warfare.

It’s a decent briefly commented list
Revisado: 03-30-25
IT IS ABSOLUTELY APPALLING THAT THE HOLOCAUST IS COMPLETELY IGNORED, ISRAEL IS THEN BRIEFLY VILIFIED WHILE OMITTING ITS STRUGGLES AND MISREPRESENTING ITS HISTORY, AND FINALLY THE TERRORISTS REPRESENTED AS SOME KIND OF LIBERATION BRIGADES. SHAMEFUL.

In KL, Wachsmann fills this glaring gap in our understanding. He not only synthesizes a new generation of scholarly work, much of it untranslated and unknown outside of Germany, but also presents startling revelations, based on many years of archival research, about the functioning and scope of the camp system.

Historia
The final and most personal work from Pulitzer Prize - winning author and historian Will Durant - discovered 32 years after his death - is a message of insight for everyone who has sought meaning in life or the council of a wise friend in navigating life's journey. From 1968 to 1978, Will Durant made four public allusions to the existence of Fallen Leaves. One, in 1975, hinted at its contents: "a not very serious book that answers the questions of what I think about government, life, death, and God."

Performance was excellent, but the book disappointing. A few good ideas, but mostly antiquated nonsense.

Historia
Touched off by a terrorist act in Bosnia and spreading all too quickly beyond the expectations of those who were involved, World War I was an unprecedented catastrophe with a ghastly cost. After this first "total war"-the first conflict involving entire societies mobilized to wage unrestrained war, devoting all their wealth, industries, institutions, and the lives of their citizens to win victory at any price - the world itself would never be the same.

Historia
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

Historia
Here Durant tells the whole story of Greece from the days of Crete's vast Aegean empire to the final extirpation of the last remnants of Greek liberty, crushed under the heel of an implacably forward-marching Rome. The dry minutiae of battles and sieges, of tortuous statecraft of tyrant and king, get minor emphasis in what is preeminently a vivid recreation of Greek culture, brought to the listener through the medium of supple, vigorous prose.

Great book. Audible part needs a bit of polishing
Revisado: 09-02-18
A little too slow. I had to accelerate it which made the voice sound a bit mechanic. Also, the continuous reading of "quote, end quote, note, end note" is quite irritating and unnecessary. I love the book and I wish it could be reread more fluidly. Quotation marks should not be enunciated any more than periods and commas should. Otherwise the reading would have been well intoned. I would like an updated version without the irritations. I hope the rest of these magnificent books is read without the above mentioned.

Good material irritating narration
Revisado: 08-12-15
This recording needs to be redone. The narrator makes so many speech mistakes that a smooth lecture is the exception rather than the rule. His voice goes up and down like an irregular roller coaster becoming a screech more often than not. There are so many ehhh and other noises, and then he always re-phrases the simplest of expressions with practically the same words. The clapping at the end and beginning of every chapter is also unnecessary.
If redone right, probably a good 3-4 hrs can be shaven off the recording thus saving precious computer real estate. He also comes off as insecure and very nervous going slowly over and repeating easy concepts, while getting completely excited, speedy, and high-pitched every time he has to explain a less obvious concept.
