Historia
Oxford, 1836. The city of dreaming spires. It is the centre of all knowledge and progress in the world. And at its centre is Babel, the Royal Institute of Translation. The tower from which all the power of the Empire flows. Orphaned in Canton and brought to England by a mysterious guardian, Babel seemed like paradise to Robin Swift. Until it became a prison. But can a student stand against an empire?

Daring, dazzling and dangerous
Revisado: 07-25-24
Beautiful use of the prerogative of an author - create a dazzling, magical word; let the characters dance, fear and love and suddenly, the reader find themselves conflicted sympathising with rebels, or conformists or as beneficiaries of colonialism.

Historia
Vividly written, The Infidel and the Professor is a compelling account of a great friendship of two towering Enlightenment thinkers that had great consequences for modern thought. David Hume is widely regarded as the most important philosopher ever to write in English, but during his lifetime, he was attacked as "the Great Infidel" for his skeptical religious views and deemed unfit to teach the young. In contrast, Adam Smith was a revered professor of moral philosophy and is now often hailed as the founding father of capitalism.

Beautifully told complex philosophy
Revisado: 12-23-23
The philosophy detailed in this book is kept alive by highlighting the fine differences between David Hume and Adam Smith.
Dennis Rasmussen has used the developing friendship between these two learned figures to unlock their historical importance.

Internationally best-selling novelist Irvin D. Yalom explores the mindsets of two men separated by 300 years. Using his skills as a psychiatrist, he explores the inner lives of Baruch Spinoza, the Jewish 17th-century secular philosopher, and of Alfred Rosenberg, outspoken Nazi ideologue, faithful servant of Hitler, the main author of racial policy for the Third Reich, and a godless mass murderer....

Masterpiece of deep thought and story telling
Revisado: 02-15-20
This book has become a touchstone in my noisy world. A master storyteller takes on two philosophical conundra, waves a story around it, and adds his own dimension. Beautifully narrated and based on sad and true events.
Thank you! A treasure I will return to in the future.
